I did the full gut (left the inner perforated/fiberglass wrapped sound deadening/insulating "stuff" in place). http://vfrworld.com/forums/6th-generation-2002-2009/39123-07-rwb-modifications-exhaust-hid-low-beams.html

After looking at both methods I decided on the a nearly full gut of a spare exhaust. Other than the welding portion, I think the overall effort and expense necessary was not significantly greater with the full gut than the alternative. Maybe it's just me, but somehow I still wanted those little exhaust pipes sticking through the end heat shield/cover. The modifications sound very good, and the system, while a few pounds lighter, looks stock. All in all the time to do it went very quickly, I was surprised how easy the process actually was. Did I mention that the bike sounds great.

Ok, I did it. Finally. I was able to pick up a used set of pipes and did the mods on them yesterday, and installed them this morning.
    And wow!

Louder than the factory mufflers, but nowhere near ear-hurting volume, and now has that nice, throaty rumble I loved on my Vulcan. At my normal 'around town' RPM levels I don't really notice the volume, just that lovely sound.

If you do this, the one different thing I'd suggest is cutting the tips off before you use the hole saw.

Thats how I did it -- from the inside of the pipes with a dremal --- then the hole saw

The dremel cutting didn't bother me; it was using a hacksaw on the tips. After the first, I cut them and THEN used the hole saw, then the dremel.

I know this thread is a few months old, but.... I bought a 2007 VFR RWB (stock) last Tuesday, and did this partial gut Saturday evening. I must say, what a difference. The sound is great! I commute in the Bay Area, 130 miles a day. Last week while lane splitting, no one heard me. Today, much different story while avoiding the cages. Thanks for the information.

    +1 to what brathabit said.

I just got an '07 last week myself and the second I started it up I said to myself "oh darn, this stock exhaust is waaaaaay too quiet." I read all the threads here about the partial gut jobs but was worried that it would make the bike too loud or I'd end up with a tiny sounding exhaust or one that resonated really bad. Well, rest assured, that is NOT the case. The end result is perfect. Just a little bit louder and deeper sounding at idle and at highway speeds, but under heavy throttle you can hear the V4 sing. It sounds so sweet! I’d do this mod again in a second.

Hope that helps anyone else that’s considering the mod.

P.S. I used a 1" Lenox saw to cut between the inner and outter pipes, then the small Dremel discs to cut through the inner pipe.

I'm pleased to see how many fellow VFR enthusiasts have added posts to this thread. A totally worth while mod! Ride safe, ATGATT.
