Ok first off I will forewarn you and this may very well be the cause I have a 1984 VF750F and I had pulled the case cover on the starter side to replace my starter BUT I went off to school and my bike sat for a good 6 months WITHOUT oil.

OK now that my foolish mistake has been brought to the forefront here is my problem. I JUST got my bike all back together (new R/R, starter soleinoid, rear tire and start/kill switch) I got a highflow oil filter from Honda and I am using rotella T6 synthetic 5w40. I got it all together and took it for a quick spin and instantly had a big problem....the bike is damn near impossiable to shift. I know it's not the cluth because it engage and disengages nicely and I can shift into neutral and first ok but when riding I have to use my ENTIRE leg to upshift. I brought it back to the house put it on the center stand and put it in first and let the clutch out and let it just free spin and the bike was bucking and jerking pretty bad and I was getting a sound similar to a dried out chain coming fro the gear shift side but I know its NOT the chain. Now my question is if ANY of you know what this may be will it smooth out over time just because my bike has been dry so long or did my stupid ass just trash my tranny?

Thank you and yes you may flame away because I know it was a stupid mistake to leave it in that state for that period of time

I doubt leaving it that long without oil had anything to do with this. I'd bleed the clutch and get all new fluid in there and any air out and see if that helps.

And when you were riding it, how was the throttle response? 6 months can easily gum up the carbs - the "bucking" you noticed on the c-stand.

oh the engine runs EXCELLENT the bucking was deffinatly related to the gear box. in first it is barely noticeable but the high the gear you put it the worse and worse it got in 5th it nearly was rocking itself off the center stand but give it throttle and it smoothed out a bit but it was still noticeable. one thing I did notice and ill have to double check it after I drain the oil again is there is a small chain that was in the case that I pulled the was kinda loose that could also be my issue. and thank you for the help ill keep this up to date if anything changes

Sync your carbs. You'd be surprised.

Ill give it a good carb cleaning BUT how does that fix the hard shifting issue though? Went out and started the bike up again and now im about 80% certain that the rear cam chain is loose

Shifting problems like yours are usually caused by a clutch that won't fully release. Without oil, there is a possibility that fibre plates are sticking or, more likely, there is air in the clutch hydraulics as vfrcapn mentioned.

If you don't fix it there is risk of tranny damage.

You hit the nail right on the head! First thing I checked was the clutch that was ok it was the lack of oil for that period of time made the tranny rough. ran it a few times and it shifts smoother then ever I might stick with synthetic. New Problem is it doesn't like to start when it's hot and trys stalling when at stop lights/signs but I have a good feeling that's a carb issue. I am doing a rebuild/clean/sync this coming weekend

Thank you all very much for the help!
