I've just noticed that many don't use a clutch to up/down shift.

    Arguements please:

I do both. Most of the time I just clutch from habit. I dont think theres really any pros or cons about it. Its more situational than anythinge else. Some will argure - oh you will damage you transmission. Well sure, if you are not
smooth about it, I suppose you could screw up a gear if you do that consistantly. Ether way - no big deal. Just be smooth.

clutch vs clutchless is like a oil thread, what ever you prefer to do. I do both. The previous owner already killed the dog teeth going into second so it jumps out of gear a lot if i power on too hard in 2nd so I try to clutch going into 2nd but sometimes I forget.

After reading about it from the links above: I'm definitely going to try it. And I should try it on the track as well.

I was gonna start a thread also, but found these threads on a search.
I have been shifting without a clutch for more than a year now. I find it smooth and simple. I really dont think it will hurt the bike although an employee from the local dealer said it will cause grooves on the clutch. I dont know about that but will research more. What do you guys know about possible damage when shifting smoothly without it?

A poor idea, especially in the rain !!

Some things can be done but shouldn't .

I always clutch unless my left hand is high fiving or gesturing to the wife on the back, or I am going 0-top speed enthusiastically.

On my old 94 CBR600 I would clutchless shift almost all the time from 3rd through 6th, that transmission was more likely to successfully engage if the input shaft didn't have a chance to slow down. I use the clutch more on the VFR, not because I want to baby it, but because the gearbox can be so buttery smooth when shifted with the clutch. I forgo the clutch when I'm already up to speed, but a couple gears behind, or forget if I already shifted into 6th or not...

I always use the clutch. It's like anything else. What parts do you want to wear out, the cable and the clutch plates (an easy fix) or the shifting dogs? (not so easy to fix.) I find I have zero need to bang shift a gear box. In fact I would love to have a DCT. One less thing to do and I am that lazy.

    Upshifting? It can be done.

Downshifting? Best be compadres with the local tranny dudes.

Probably about 25% of my street riding is clutchless upshifts and 75% of track riding is clutchless (no quick shifter but you wouldn't know it) even while leaned over. If done properly it's fine, but if you have a hard time learning to do it then some damage could be caused. It's all personal preference, just like 1 finger or 2 finger braking.

Skilled implementation of the clutch is more than just upshifting and backshifting.
