Glad to hear your son is okay and you have the opportunity to move forward and be a bigger part of his life. Can't imagine going through anything like this with one of my kids. Thanks for sharing.

thanks again for everyones support. This is a thread to alert everyone, both parents and persons here to show the dangers of energy drinks. For me this is no BSing. I know I am usually trolling this site or putting my smart ass two cents in on a topic but for me this is as real as it gets. My hope is to show you guys what energy drinks does to a loved one no matter who it is. My hope is to post pics of him in the effed up stages of this. He has asked me not to show pics of him during this because he is embarrassed of this. (I know it seems trivial but I will respect his wishes. He doesn't event know I am apart of this site and posting this). My goal from this is to show the pics of this and then show the progress he has made. This is a great effing site. If I can prevent one parent from enduring this then I feel that this post has made a point. My best hope right now that this is my last downey doter post of this episode and you guys will see my son on a bike burning through curves on a bike. (think Im going to get him a ol' shadow like I learned on). Thanks again guys and gals.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, and certainly glad to hear your son will be ok. Being a new(er) dad and having a 4 and 6 year old, it is hearing stories like this that really make you think about all that we may take for granted sometimes in life.

There are many things in life that should be done in moderation, but sharing time and just BEING there with an for family is not one of them in my opinion. Sometimes life does get in the way, but we should all try to make time for those in our life who count most, and that is our family.

As a newish parent (my son just entered grade 1 this year) I know that sooner or later there are going to be times that I can not protect my son or daughter, and that all I can do is hope and pray that we have raised them to make good decisions and to be conscious of their own actions. If I have learned one thing in the past 6 years as a parent it is that we can not always prevent accidents from happening but we can be there to help afterwards and offer our love, support and guidance. We have all done things in life that we may look back on and think, "Duh, that was stupid!" Hopefully we learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat them.

All the best to you and your family diVeFR and hope that there will be many good times to come.

Just spotted this thread - wow that was one scary near miss.

Hope the kid pulls through and you get some quality time together. A sensible pillion ride is a good start - and if he is up for it, a sensible first bike may hopefully pull him away from the games console long enough to realise there is a "real" world out there to explore on a motorbike, which is far more addictive than any NRG drink.

    Take care

I am very sorry to hear about your son. I hope he makes a full recovery and he learns from him mistake. Such is human nature to make mistakes and learn how not to repeat them. I personallly drink RedBull about 4 days a week. I dont have time to sleep with the fact that I am a single father now with 2 little girls and I work 2 full time jobs. I am also thinking about going back to college again for the 3rd time. I have to say that energy drinks as is with many things is to use it in moderation and never mix with other types of energy items. ie pills or coffee or anything else that keeps you awake or gives you energy. I drink them while only my weekend rides and they keep me alert and not on the side of the road. Also I think that video games as a way to keep kids out of trouble are a good thing. If it is done in moderation. Dont allow the kids to play all day all the time, but the games do keep kids off the streets and out of trouble. another good thing is that if they are playing games then they are close enough to keep an eye on them. Not to say you should let games raise your kids either. Make a rule no more then x-amount of time a day on the games. Mine play 1 hour a day and then they can read a book or play with other kids outside in my yard or at there friends houses. I think that moderation of anything (with the exception of drugs)(abstenance is the best policy for those) is a good thing. Teaching your son to ride is a GREAT idea, however i would warn you that forcing him to do something will only make him do it short term and then make him dislike the thing later on in life. Maybe you could play a game with him every now and then if that is what his passion is. There are people who make good money as testers playing games, not the worst job in the world IMO. I agree that you should drink lots of water but too much is a bad thing too it will flush all the good nutrients from your body.( I heard once that 8 cuos a day is what is suggested) In short I am glad you are getting a second chance with your son. make it count and love him like there is no tommorrow. It is not promised to any of us, we are just blessed to wake up in it.

Sorry to hear about the mishap. I hope he makes a full recovery.

Some people have died of heart-attack from drinking too much of that cr@p. and I'm not talking about oldies either. Those things are bad news, and they really should be banned!

So what is your take on meth in small amounts? I hear that brushing and flossing is not much help.

If you banned everything with risk we would all be without our bikes. Maybe a well placed warning label would suffice. Around here they did say no the the alcohol laced energy drinks that had the effect of making you both drunk and very alert. The effects were both hard on the body and devastating behind the wheel.

I would like to know the statistics, (if there are any) on the number of kids that this happens too. Monster and Red Bull have huge marketing campaigns aimed at young adults.

I suppose it's great to be an advocate of the always and never school of belief. Notice that I didn't say school of thought. I'm happy you found the same info that has been in the PDF for years and you didn't have to C&P the info. If aspirin is causing any of these effects in you or your family please cease usage. We can address the problem of which laxative is best for you at a later date.

I agree. Just today I was in Walmart and I am happy to report that finally they are putting labels on cucumbers. Unfortunately the chemistry of cucumbers runs to about sixty pages of formulae and that is just for the ones that are gluten free and certified organic.

So do you have info on prepackaged "energy" drinks that have alcohol as a fraction? Likely there are bars serving laced energy type drinks that are mixed on premises.

If labels were really useful, Uncle would put them on cellphones.

Gotta agree on the "if they knew" mention.. They do know and the only thing that holds them at bay is the strong lobbys from the world of wheels. There are those if they had their way that would ban breathing because the CO2 and methane coming out the other end is causing global warming and other shit..;)

Without being harsh I'm going to say that is parenting. A child could just as easily buy coffee after coffee and achieve the same result.....or what about a child skipping meals and just banging Reeses, Snickers, and other candy/chocolate? Are we going to go after coffee beans next?

OP described the situation as energy drinks were the only thing his child was consuming. He wasn't eating, and as far as we know that's all he was consuming. I'd venture a guess and say the same thing would happen with alcohol.

To me there is nothing wrong with RedBull. I had one during my ride on Saturday. I enjoy them but I only have one at a time. I've consumed 3 per day while on a road trip, once, but I was eating 3 square meals so it wasn't a concern either. Energy drinks, like coffee, alcohol, ice cream, chocolate bars, or most anything in life, are just fine in moderation. IE common sense. I happen to like RedBull, see nothing wrong with it, and certainly like them sponsoring MotoGP. They spend huge amounts of money in racing where other companies don't.

If you want to really do something about this then teach the kids around you about marketing and advertising. Teach them that just because they see ads doesn't mean they need to be consumed by them. Teach them what a demographic is, a target audience, and why marketers treat everyone as suckers. Then teach them about moderation and common sense. If the body doesn't get nutritious food, or get water, bad things happen and dire consequences. Teach health and reasoning, that is the solution. Going after energy drink mfr's isn't the solution neither is legislation. Hell, obesity took over as #1 killer in the States, passing even smoking cigarettes. There is a drug pusher on every block around me (fast food), in many places 4 on each block, and I view fast food more dangerous than most things you could put in your body but I wouldn't put in a call to arms against McDonalds or the rest of them. I would just teach a kid that while it may taste good, it's loaded with horrible shit and bad for you. Do you want to live a long healthy life, or get a short one? Choose and act accordingly.

well, I currently do have a LOT of beer. I am a home brewer, and haven't brewed anything in a while just because I've been buying one here one there, sample packs. I did a taste testing several months ago and counted over 40 different beers that I had. Brands, flavors, styles, along with what I had made. I've got beer that is pushing a year old. If you come over, I'm all for sharing.

A didactic POV on that one dude. One might ask if indeed you are a parent. Worst, the premise that kids in general have common sense is BS.

Maybe we can figure out a way to put labels on the kids who do or don't have common sense.

The OP if you read carefully was not in same place his child was not being taken care of properly...if at all.

Taking this issue just one step further. If it were known in many states and municipalities that this boy was hospitalized because one parent or another knowingly allowed the child to go without meals and by one means or another provided one of the so called energy drinks in such a number as to cause major trauma, Child Protective Services would step in and the kid would have new place to live and one or more parents might do some time in the slammer.

Fast food is worse than jolts of sugar, caffeine and who knows what in a pop can?... LOL .

There was a rumor floating around the home brewers set that some dude in SoCal had brewed up a batch of ale using a yeast sample from a hooker who had a yeast infection resulting in pussy flavored beer.

Is there any truth to this or is is just another internet spoof?

    Thank full Thanksgiving

Here is the update... he is here in Tx and doing well. He started working immediately when he got here so our chances of hanging out have been limited, but when we do its a blast.

    photo 1.jpg photo 2.jpg photo 3.jpg

Camping the weekend before Thanksgiving.... Absolutely freezing here in Tx that weekend (38 f with 85-90 percent humidity and it drizzled)

Oh I almost forgot... Here is the before picture......If you have a weak stomach look away....

Yes Redbull/energy drinks can do that to you. This is just before last rights were given to him. Im very happy to say that while he has been living with us he hasn't had one energy drink. Ill take his recovery as one of the best Christmas gifts to ever have. Have a safe and Happy Holidays VFRW!!!!
