Recently acquired 2001, have got it running once with a jump from my truck, LCD display does not work, and it won't crank on the good battery from MY 1998.

I remove the rear cowl and on the right side is this thing.

It has wires coming out of it that head towards the crankshaft sprocket. I'll do more bodywork removal and trace the wires next chance I get.

In the meantime I wanted to see if someone could identify what this thing is.

It was wrapped in exhaust wrap.. and appears to have some foil wrapped around the enclosed cylinders.

    Thanks
    Patrick

I looked in my 2003 manual and they look like heat shields, so probably the connections to the O2 sensors, does your bike have a catalytic converter? Don't know what year they started putting on bikes.

That's what I was thinking too, but these are typically under the engine near the exhaust, not the rear cowl. Unless the PO rerouted them to keep them from hanging below the bike, not sure what else they could be. As far as I am aware, this doesn't look like anything that should be under the rear cowl.

PWH, did you try and unwrap it to get a better look? What part of the country are you located?

those are o2 sensors. If the bike has an aftermarket exhaust the PO owner didn't get the exhaust with the bungs in them. Those are the down stream ones (after cat)

Good call on the 02 sensors...

I removed the exhaust to replace the rear tire, and noticed there wasn't a junction of pipes into a big lunchbox below the engine like I'm used to seeing on mine. So I thought it must have a full system (Two brothers.. though its stainless) ..

The bike is so dirty I was going to clean it up to be able to tell for the pipes.

So it looks like this must be 02 sensors... What should I do about them? Leave them as they are? It has a PCII on it.

    Thanks alot guys.

I began unwrapping them, which is what looked like foil, which appeared to be glued all around them. But I knew two canisters like that wouldn't be grouped together like this. (I'm finding alot of jerry rigging on this bike) So I'm not sure if this is heat shield or just tin foil glued into a wrapper.

    I live in Charlotte, NC.

I would agree that by what protrudes from the foil that they look like O2 sensors. Probably wrapped in Duct Tape (the actual stuff made for HVAC ducting) I don't understand why they're still attached to the harness, they should have been unplugged and replaced with O2 emulators (just a resistor). If they are what we all think they are, unplug em and put the proper resistors in place. Instant weight reduction (HA) but mostly clutter removal.

Hands down those are the 02 sensors. The cat was obviously removed, unless the prior owner was a complete idiot. Right now it only appears that he was a moron.

My bike is the same. My entire system was replaced, and I run a 2BR system as well. No more cat, so no 02 sensors. You either have a full 2BR exhaust, or the header has at least been swapped out with a prior model (1998-99). These were cat-less, and also about 2-3mm larger. If yours is stainless, its probably the full 2BR as well. Nice find.

Apparently the previous owner thought sealing those 02 sensors with some form of heat tape would suffice. Its no bueno.

Trace the lines back on those sensors. Unplug them and take them out. Go to your local radio shack and get yourself 2 (two) 330 oHm resistors. (I can't remember the part number, but could probably post this later tonight or tomorrow when I can take a look at my bike). Its only like $3 for a package of 5. Install these resistors into the plug still on the bike completing the circuit, and you've effectively and correctly bypassed the 02 sensors while still allowing your PC to function properly. Without the 02 sensors or the 330 resistors, that bike is probably running rich as hell and getting about 22mpg.

The reason it was wrapped in exhaust wrap (or whatever it was) is because the only place to "store" it after having unplugged it is directly on top of the motor. With the heat that's generated down there, any sort of tape would have melted and burned.

As for your issues with the bike not starting & losing the LCD, have you done "The Drill"? If not, clicky the link below.

Here we go - a little update for you.

    part #271-1315 from Radio Shack.

Here's how you would make the connection. Then seal it up nicely with some electrical tape to keep the debris and elements out. (I borrowed this picture from the dark side because I'm at work and that was easier to do than taking my own pic tonight! lol).

Just got 330 ohm, 1 watt resistors at Frys.
