Ok this one may get me the dipshit of the day award, but I wanted to be safe just in case. I backed the bike out of the house this morning, checked the oil, tires, etc, then started it up to let it warm up. I happen to look down at the oil window and saw absolutely nothing. IS that normal when the engine is running? It was between the two lines when it was off and sitting level. Just figured I would ask first just in case.

Was your bike still on the kickstand? Leaned over slightly to the left??

Pull/hold the bike Level & view the oil...

It is quite normal not to see an oil "level" while the motor is running. The best way to check the oil is with the bike level and on the center stand. In this position, the oil level should be above the min line and at or below the max line of the oil level window.

But should it be closer to the top line or closer to the bottom line. Exactly how much oil should we be putting in there. I seem to recall going over and over this point with someone here about a year ago. JUST KIDDING!

@1stCavArmyVet. If you think about this you will understand. When the bike parked on its centre stand and not running, all the oil (well almost all) has drained into the reservoir. The moment you start it up and the oil pump does its thing, it is pulling a lot of oil out of the reservoir and pumping it into the system where it is needed. It won't settle back until you shut it down. Let it sit for a few moments before you check for proper level. If the oil is cold, let it sit for a long period of time. So long as it is between those two lines while the motor is stopped, it has sufficient oil taking into consideration the tolerances built into the design of the bike. Same as a car's dip stick.
