I'm averaging about 25 MPG. What gives? What should I troubleshoot to see what might be the problem?

Might need some more info, Model/Year/Gas/length of test.

2007. 93 octane. Started tracking on 4/25. Full tank on 5/5 and was at 24.8 MPG. Full tank again this morning (5/8) and was at 27.2 MPG. I've got a Leo Vince exhaust but would guess that would only help with MPG if anything. That's the only mod.

Need operating temps when you are running.

Oftentimes mileage that bad means a stuck open T-stat, resulting in the computer dumping fuel in because its treating it like a "cold start" engine.

As stated above likely a thermostat, or maybe an O2 sensor...

A side note....waste of $$$ running 93, these bikes only require 87

Also worth knowing - how much do you weigh? I am a fatass, so I expect bad MPG, but still not that bad.

Running an octane that is too high can hurt your mileage as well. I have experienced this with my 2004 Nissan Titan. 91 octane was costing me about 3mpg! I get 15-16 running 87 octane.

My poor mileage was helped considerably (30 miles + per tank) by replacing the gummed up air filter.

93 octaine is too high for these engines unless your running at wot all the time.
i have found that the 87 octane we get out here is fairly close to burnable water, mid grade isnt much better so I run 91. I have noiticed my max distance depends on grade of fuel. 89 octane from a reputable (shell or mohawk up here) is my best performer for distance.

I would look at engine temps and t-stat. the ecu requires the engine to get up to temp for best mileage. IAT and O2 sensors next, go to dealer and have them plug in to check these. they must be checked while at temp and riding normally.

make sure your evap purge solenoid isnt stuck open. this will hurt your mileage horribly.

What is your reasoning for running 93?

Thanks everyone! I run 93 because that's what the guy who told me I should use (didn't bother to research that... my bad). Not sure if it's related (I'm a mechanical boob) but since several of you mentioned operating temps, it has also been running hot. I've had the overheat indicator come on several times in the past week or so.

Man, if I only weighed 175, I'm thinking I would get infinte MPG!

As for octane. If your engine isn't pinging, it's fine. If it starts pinging and knocking, go up to the next octane level. If you have ethanol gas, it will reduce MPG too. Just FYI. If you can find it, run pure gasoline.

seller sounds like one of those folks whose under the mistaken impression that the higher octane # and super duper premium fantastic label on the pump means more power.

The overheat indicator has come on several times in a week? That's not normal. You might want to check the coolant, etc.

Agreed. I would start a new thread though Monkey. Makes it easier to keep replies consistent.

my 2006 gets around 45mph or more if I stay between 4500 and 6000rpm,it eats a lot of gas when the vtec kicks in. As far as gas is concerned, I second the 89 octane shell as the best to use-perhaps maybe 88 might be best. So fill the tank with 87 then next time use 89. A little techron and seafoam too. That poor mileage something is very wrong with either the rider or the bike. the bike actually gets better mileage than my 600 r6 did due to the vtec.:suspicious::high5:

Mixing octane grades wont hurt since this bike doesnt have a fuel sensor. Go easy on the seafoam in the gas, its a solvent and will over time cause injector failure. Use it in the first tank of the season and again in the early fall when the gas companies start screwing with the fuel content. Adding a little to the oil 25 to 40 miles before an oil change will help with keeping the sludge from building.

As for cooling issues, start a new thread. Helps us help you by topic. As for things to check: cooling fan! Coolant level in rads and bottle. Running temps need to be posted along with type of rising (eg. stop and go traffic)
