Had a search around looking for a guide post of some sort like this,,,, What is your servicing routine, I'm talking about a good yearly service, including oil, filter, air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid change, clutch fluid change, brake pad check, etc etc..... What I'm looking to find out is from experienced owners who service thier own bike, I will be doing any/all jobs that I can myself, and I plan to do a big service soon, Id just like to know in what order should things be carried out in order to save time etc.......

    So far my preliminary plan is as follows;
    1) Wash bike and dry
    2) remove fairings (bought new fixings to replace the miriad of screws holding it together now)
    3) brake fluid change
    4) oil and filter change (I done this already last month but I plan on doing it again anyway for a good clean service)
    5) air filter change (bought, but I need to review how this is done)
    6) Spark plug replacement
    7) brake pad check and change if necessary (pads bought)
    8) suspension check...
    9) nuts and bolts check (some are missing and I will need to regrove and refit)
    10) electrical check (if i have time i need to find a short which i believe is due to the evac exhaust change, something earthing through the headlight)
    11) Finish off with fairing replacement, brake check, clean and polish..

I have no idea what kind of time this will take me as Im newbie but the oil and filter and coolant change went fairly well and quickly last time around...

Have I got some sort of order on this or am I missing any key compononts.. cheers in advance

    Mark

You didnt say anything about mileage, but you have a '98 5th gen, which is notorious for eating electrics. Do a charging system check soon.
    - Look at link post #9
    http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/39277-How-to-fix-common-regulator-Stator-failures

The rest of the maintenance is mostly based on miles and riding seasons.
    oil - 3k - 4k
    Chain clean/lube - around 700 miles
    Brake/clutch fluid -- every 2 or 3 seasons.
Everything else is kind of a as the pulse of the bike needs it. I do general inspection of stuff near constantly, just cause I like to.

Sorry yeah the mileage is 23 miles!, the previous owner had it lying up for a long time, it has new battery now and I ran electrical test it all seems fine now apart from the FI light short but its not an issue I will sort that soon, I also changed the oil/oil filter and coolant.

The chances are that the FI light is not a short, but a bad earth block.
This is a well documented fault with the 5th gen. Check the posts & you'll find it.
If it's been sitting for a long time, I would suggest dismantling and cleaning of brake/clutch reservoirs, and front forks, not just fresh fluid.
Use iridium plugs, that way you won't have to do them again for a long time.
Also run some injector cleaner with your next fill up before you change your oil again.

Thanks yeah its just a matter of getting in at electrics when I have fairings off, when you say dismantling and cleaning of brake/clutch fluid, my plan was to bleed the lines and fully replace with new fluid, all as per haynes manual, does that cover that? I know it will involve taking the rear wheel off to access rear caliper so ill have to get locking compound to reseal. im going to leave the fork fluid for another day this time around, and I cant remember if i ordered iridium plugs or not but they will be changed with whatever arrives in the post......

Im still gathering tools parts etc so I just want to get a clear picture of where to start and run through those servicing parts, I suppose it dosent matter in what order I do them in does it.......
Any takers on the order of events!?

Ill also check the idle speed adjusment it seems to be a bit low
