I would venture a fairly drunken educated guess of "no". The VF series had a major overhaul in 1986...is why I say that. But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable about these bikes will fill you in. I am currently dealing with the same issue on my current rebuild...good luck!

    No.
Thats not to say it cant be made to fit.
Try ebay uk or germany. There are 4 years worth of vfr750s to go for 86 87 88 89. All will fit the rc26 vfr700.

In that case, it should fit, but the fuel valves are different. Hopefully you're getting the whole kit n kaboodle? I put an '86 tank on my '85 with some fiddling.

Thought this would be a good place to start I bought a 84 vf500f2 and the inside and outside where the usual pin holes are is rusty as hell so you think it would be worth trying to save or scrap and get another? Just bought the bike so no pictures ect but no doubt I will be asking for help every step of my rebuild

From experience holes are a pin in the a**e if you can get another tank go for it.
The one I bought did not fir I need an 86 but thinking of a modification as it is in excellent condition
You can seal the tank providing the holes are very small
Any leak and the paint is shot and the agro of are oval
    Good luck!

It looks bad but might not be as bad I haven't tested it my self but from reading other posts it seems common that they have pin holes in the area that mine has rusted and the inside is too I think someone might of tyres testing it in water as the petrol cap was rusted shut too
