    Right on...
And I am gonna try putting some high temp silicone between the mufflers and the collector, cause I don't think they fit together quite perfect.

Is it leaking. Do you feel air rushing out there?

I don't know yet... The bike is still at the shop; I won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow

    Update:

Yesterday I took all the exhaust parts off and put them back on very carefully with new gaskets and some high-temp silicone. Once I got the headers and collector on I started the bike for a few seconds, and the noise SEEMED to go away. Then again the exhaust itself was very loud with no mufflers so it was hard to tell.

This morning I put the F1 mufflers back on and started it, and the noise was back. So I took them off and put on the stock mufflers, and it was the same damn thing. So I'm guessing it's not actually an exhaust leak.

My girlfriend's uncle is friends with a motorcycle mechanic around here somewhere, and he said I might be able to get a good deal on some service from him. So I'm going to look into that.

Its a ticking that is coming from around the engine. The exhaust leak that I was talking about comes from where the header meets the engine. But if you are still getting ticking and its not the valves. Maybe the cam chain is loose? I don't know but maybe you have gone thru everything and you should take it to a shop. But you can take one for the team and then share the info with rest of us so we can learn.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. The thing is I'm gonna be out of town for like 3 weeks in a few days and I'd like it to be fixed when I come back, so I might just put it in the shop.

Good luck. I hope the mechanic isn't a lazy fool. That way its money well spent.
I knew a guy ounce that went to the junk yard and got a new rearend for my truck in the snow by-himself with no ride home. And he only charged me $100 for that and installing it. Then his tweeker offspring stole my liscense plates and acted like I never had any. But because he went to the junk yard and the whole 9yards I tipped him $50 and told him I wouldn't have him arrested for stealing the plates if he never bothered me again. His son came over to fight me over the money and lost. But after all that he was the best mechanics I have ever met.

My 1000 makes a noise like that too but its only at idle and starts a few min after starting the bike and i think its louder. I just got it and am just learning to ride so a buddy of mine that races bikes and does most of his own work looked at it. Him and his father (also into bikes) said for right now not to worry about it. I won't be beating on the bike so it shouldn't be a big deal but once i learn how to ride and start romping on it to get it checked out. I've also read about the oiling problem and seen the rig up you can get to solve the problem but the people wanted like 300 bucks for it.

$300 is alot cheaper than sourcing out new cams and rockers due to pitting and scoring. The best one with the most research behind it is made by Dave Dodge.

I noticed today that my starter is loose. I hit the button and just heard it spin. I think that you should check the starter bolts. That could be the cause of my ticking and yours.

You mean the starter clutch? This is a very common problem. There are little pawls with springs in there. The springs get sacked out and stop pushing the pawls out properly, and then the starter clutch just spins and doesn't turn the engine over like it should. The fix is to replace the springs.

Use OEM springs. Too strong of a spring will gause gauling. To weak won't push out the pawls enough.

I hope you won't suffer from the same fate as me. My motorcycle developed a clicking noise this weekend over the 100 mile trip between Milwaukee and Madison.

This winter I adjusted the valve clearances because it had never been done and I wanted to take a look at the cams. Clearances were a bit off as expected and were adjusted, cams were pretty badly pitted. The engine has been running better than ever this year and I've put on about 1200 miles.

I just rechecked the valves today because of the clicking noise and clearances were alright. However, one of the cam-lobes has worn excessively. I'm pretty disappointed, the once wonderful v4 and kerker pipe sound has been replaced by a ticking I can't help but hear.

That being said, check the cam faces for wear. No matter how well you adjust the clearances, if the faces are fucked so are you.

I haven't had a chance to check the bolts or the starter. I don't know what to look for once I get the starter off either.

Alright I checked the starter bolts and I think that I know what is wrong. Wiggle the starter before you do the next thing because you might not have to take it out. But take off the right side cover and there is a gear right there that was loose on mine. It was what was ticking. I think its worth a look into becareful not to break the gasket and if you leave it on the kick stand you won't spill "as much" oil.

Hey guys, I'm not home right now, I'm in South Dakota doing a race for the SAE group at school. Anyway, I'll have to check out this starter thing later! But keep these ideas coming!

If you roll the bike up onto a 2x4, you'll spill even less oil.

Now you tell me. I didn't think 3 quarts was that much until I seen it on the floor. Next time I am going to pull the cover off on my neighbors lawn. That way I'm happy.

Alrighty, my girlfriend's uncle hooked me up with an independent mechanic, and I'm going to have him take a look at it tonight after work. Maybe I'll finally make some progress towards getting it fixed!

I gave up on the Honda dealership... they weren't very helpful.

I'll post an update tonight if we figure out what the problem is!
