Uh, there's nothing new about "looking cool" over performance. Look at the furry bikes, stretched swingarms, chromed frames, smoked windshields, bigger rear tires, the list goes on and on. Harley riders aren't
the only ones guilty of "Cool over performance". Or you could point out the 4 wheel drive vehicles with 30" wheels for Pete's sake, or smoked headlight lenses so you cut down on that nasty glare.

OTOH I have no use for Harleys, or for cruiser bikes in general AFATG.

 

What kind of person wonders whether to buy a Multistrada or a Fat Boy? Completely different motorcycles for completely different uses. I don't even get how on earth this UPS dude narrowed his choice to these two bikes. What criteria was he using???

I like the Harley they built in WW2 that is designed after the BMW. The story is the US army observed how the BMW was built and liked the boxer engine design and then asked Harley to make some like the BMW. After the war, Harley dumped the boxer design and went back to the usual.

 

Both the Chinese and the Russians copied those Fhead boxers. The Russian version is still being sold new as Urals.. The Urals are greatly updated..

I can't say I hate Harley Davidson, but I bought a 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special with all magic, had it for 2 weeks, when sold it to buy the new 2014 VFR800. I actually like the VFR better even though there's no cruise control, music or bags.

 

This has happened before. You also gained 25 IQ points the same day.

I had the receptionist at my gym once tell me that she wanted to get a motorcycle.

"What are you looking at?", I asked.

"Either a Harley or a Ducati!", came the reply.

 

I kinda wish I liked Harleys. Harley riders have the entire "HD-Lifestyle" packages laid out for them - clothing (INCLUDING assless chaps! VERY important!), goofy helmets, chrome packages, beer mugs, towels, key fobs, condoms, etc.. They never have to clutter their minds with choices. What freedom! JUST GO WITH THE CORPORATE APPROACH!

Me? I feel compelled to do a cost/benefit analysis for every purchase. Not the Harley Dudes. It's all laid out for them . . .

Y'know, I am just loving reading the entertaining replies to what's become my favorite harley bashing thread ever, but we do hafta give "the company" their due credit. If they we such dicks who make such crappy bikes, they would have never lobbied Congress to curb imports (hence trying to curb competition) back in the mid 80s and the VFR may have never come into its own as strongly as it did. As a 2nd gen owner, I say thank you HD. You suck, you're dicks, and your customers are idiots, and my bike is awesome because of that.

Yesterday a mate and his son turned up on a pair of new Indians from the dealership for a days test riding around the hills. Monster machines and my CB750f was all over the back of them in the hills but they certainly look better than the Victory's and to me all the Harleys just look the same, can't tell the difference
