This is off a '90 VFR - i've cleaned out the pilot jets three times and they keep clogging back up so I thought i'd dig a little deeper this time. When I pulled out the first diaphram (i'm wrestling with some stripping issues on the other three) I found this white stuff on the rubber portion. Does anyone know what this is and how best to clean it (i.e. carb cleaner, soap and water, etc.)? It seems to rub off pretty easily but I don't want to damage them. After I clean it off should I add any sort of vinyl/rubber protectant to the diaphrams before reassembling? Thanks.
i don't have a clue about that white she-it, but soap and water is good to start. i like to soak the whole rack of carbs in pine-sol for 24 hours to loosen up all the dirt before tearing it down for a cleaning and verifying all the jets and ports are open to the proper diameter. plus it smells good, like the pure southern pine forest...
I've read a few different sites that recommend the Pine-Sol soak - so do you soak them before pulling off the float bowls and the diaphram covers or after?
I would think that its just powder / dust from the minor corrosion you find on 24 year old aluminum carb bodies. The diaphragms look pretty healthy otherwise. A mild detergent should do the trick, I would say less is more in this case. I like the Pine-sol idea.
