Did some trading with my brother in law and ended up with this bike that he bought about 5 years ago. It was fully functional when he bought it and I actually rode it home for him since he didn't have a license and had never ridden before.

Started taking it apart yesterday to clean carbs and found this mess.

I was hoping for a "beater" bike to just have a bit of fun on after being without a motorcycle for a few years. Was hoping a carb clean and new battery and fluids would have it going.

Any suggestions on what to do?

What is the white fluffy stuff? Does it turn over? Did it get wet in storage?

Not sure what white stuff is. I assume some sort of corrosion. It's vey powdery.

Bike was stored in attached garage under cover for the 5 years that it wasn't running.

Firstly welcome to the MadHouse from the far side of the pond.

I guess after 30 years those carbs deserve some tlc. Whilst I can't offer any practical advice on the 500 - as I have never owned one, you will find the search function on the forum is actually quite good and should locate posts where others have tackled similar problems. I think Toe did a write up a while back which may be worth tracking down.

Its a good idea to update your forum profile (link at top of page) to include the year/specs of your bike and a rough location city/state is fine. That way the information will appear alongside your posts and if you need help you may find people nearby willing to swing by, especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge.:drink:

Take care and let us know how your get on.

PS - more pictures of the whole bike will be good!

Carbs are the least of your worries by the looks of it. You need to get the white crap out and just generally inspect the valve stems and seats if possible. If the valves are badly corroded then I'd write it off as unsalvageable. Part it out on Ebay if this is the case.

Yea, I agree that the carbs are the least of my problems at the moment!

Not sure how to tackle the powder. Maybe a vacuum with a real small nozzle? I don't want to knock it all down into the combustion chambers

I'd remove a plug (or all of 'em) & check inside the cylinders. If any of the valves were open while it was sitting its possible that shits already inside.

An airline for the valves that are closed and blow it out? Most of it will end up in your eyes without protection. You might want to check it turns over before you do much more. Maybe pour some oil into the inlet tracts to make the fluffy stuff less fluffy and that way the stems might move and not pull the valve guides out of the head. Honestly though, it looks pretty bad to me.

Found an adapter for shop vac that is real small. Gonna have a to at it and clean out anything I can see. Maybe put some marvel mystery oil or something down there and rotate by hand to see if it will turn over.

If that works and turns over ok, I guess next order of buisness is compression test.

Will update when I get a chance. It Will probably be a couple days.

Thanks everyone for the advise so far.

Only have $350 into it, so even if it gets parted I should be OK. Hope it doesn't come to that though!

So just a quick update. I sprayed down I takes with PB Blaster and the white stuff just dissolved instantly. Pulled plugs and have each cylinder a good hose down too. Will let it sit a few hours and then try turning motor over by hand and see what happens. The two cylinders I could see down (the back two) had no white stuff in them at all. If motor turns over, I'll drain oil out and add fresh oil I have laying around and spin it over by starter I guess. I'll leave plugs out since I sprayed quite a bit of blaster down there.

If that goes well, I guess it's on to compression check.

don't be surprised if your compression test gives some crazy results with wet cylinders.
