Just bought this 1986 Honda Interceptor last week and it's been running fine up until this morning.

Earlier in the week I noticed I had trouble starting the bike when it's cold, I'd hit the start button and hear the starter motor turn, but seemed like it wasn't catching...like I'd hear the starter but not the actual engine turn.

This morning when I started it, I noticed the same thing, except no matter how many times I'd try, it couldn't catch.

So I push start it, and it sounded like something was loose inside the bike. Just wasn't sounding right (actually sounded louder than normal) and was idling kind of low even after it was fully warmed up.

I'm not sure what to do, I know the starter is probably fucked and needs a rebuild, but what the hell is wrong with my actual engine??

If anyone could shed some light it'd be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a starter clutch to me. PITA on some bikes but don't know about the VFR.

I took the cover off and briefly looked at what I think is the starter clutch and it seemed fine. No cracks or bumps. Still think it might be the starter clutch?

Ok then if that is a fresh battery with 12.6 volts and the motor is not locked up if you can push it in gear and the motor rotates then you have a starter problem, most likely in the starter clutch, the fact that it pulls the ignition light down to me indicates the starter motor itself is ok

I found a starter motor and starter clutch on ebay for 20 bucks. Now though, I'm not so sure its the starter clutch since I haven't been able to push start it at all lately. Every time I try the back wheel just locks up and slides.

I would take out a couple of spark plugs and turn the engine by hand to see if it is still able to spin.

If the starter clutch housing isn't cracked, it's possible to order repair parts:springs & rollers. Must disassemble for inspection. Find a broken spring/s ?? Easy and cheap repair !!
