Hey, people. We woke this morning at 3:20 to feel the house moving at 2 feet per second.

We had a 6.1 earthquake near Napa in a small neighboring town called American Canyon. Many of our friends had their kitchen contents dumped and will have to replace nearly all their dishes. Shelves and things on the walls were dumped for many folks and we had some structural damage to buildings around town. An apartment complex had all their car ports fail and lots of businesses had significant loss from inventory damage. We'll see just how many barrels and bottles of wine were lost across all the wineries in the valley, never mind the structural damages. Trefethen winery had their main winery building/warehouse partially shift/collapse. Probably total loss/rebuild for that winery. We also had many historic buildings damaged along with 4 homes lost to fire. Seems like injuries were mostly due to items falling off walls or maybe folks walking on broken glass, but one child was injured due to a collapsed chimney.

My household got REALLY lucky. We lost one bottle of Dewars whiskey (broken cap) and no broken glass. However ..... my VFR got dumped on its right side breaking a brand new mirror I had just fitted and my wind screen is toast .

On the positive side, the lightweight, no-drill mushroom sliders fitted on the fairing brackets took the brunt of the fall and saved all my body work. Whew!

If you want this to count on your dump numbers, you need to post it on that thread. Does not add to your running total unless you mention it is the right place. Get you mind on track here!

Must have been quite the scare. But to some degree, you guys must be somewhat accustomed to shake rattle and roll there. Hope all your loved ones were as lucky as you. But damned, a broken bottle of whiskey. Sure glad it wasn't good single malt scotch.

Phew - glad you folks are all OK. I hope the area manages to get back on its feet real soon as Napa makes some fine wines - sadly a lot of French vineyards took a real battering from hail in early July, so we just might help with the export drive!

Fingers crossed you can get the bike sorted without too much hassle. I vote this fall gets an honourable mention but does not add to the score!

    Take care

What a wake up call! 16 Miles from American Canyon. Started as a low rumble, manufactured home shaking on foundation, became more intense and went on for over 20 seconds, thought for sure it was going to slip off.

VFR was on centered stand and stayed there.

Will Power staying in Napa got a rude awakening, but GoPro Race is just starting at Somona.

Northern Italian wines are crap this year too. Hail, as the french got, and too much rain besides. Wife and I were walking through the vineyards yesterday, so much rot and bursting. She (the wine bio-technologist) also says there is a chance they won't ripen at all. The summer just didn't get hot or dry enough.

I don't think this should count as you dropping the bike. This is more like the earth falling on your bikes side, not the other way around.

Haven't heard how our Okanagan wine grapes are doing this year. Last couple decades we have been producing quite a bit of award winning wines, not that I would know the difference in wine. I buy mine in the cooking section at the corner market!

I took a look and can't find a brand on the sliders for you nookiaz. I did do some looking and found that oppracing.com is selling a slider made by Gilles Tooling that says it is a no-cut version just like mine.

    http://www.oppracing.com/product_display/15532-gilles-tooling-frame-sliders-no-cut/

Some folks think this style of slider is useless, some say this style of slider has protected their plastics well when they laid it down at speed. What I can say for sure is that they certainly protected the plastics this time and a drop with these on is WAY better than a drop without anything.

Glad you came out OK Dahose. We had a little tremor run though Anaheim last night, nowhere near what Napa had but when I felt it, I thought uh oh, let's hope it's not like up North. Having lived in CA almost my entire life so far (other than 2 years in Vegas), I still have not gotten totally used to quakes. I've learned to live with them but they always put me on edge for a few days after and feeling the after shock tremors, always wondering if this will be the "Big One"! I agree with others, this does not count as an "I dropped it", so your tally should not change. The worry for me is the crap on the shelves in my garage, a lot of electronics and most of it pretty light weight with sharp metal edges, but there's a few heavy computers on the top shelves...looks like I'll be contributing to the next e-waste drive they have at the elementary school, hopefully before the next shaker!

We have earthquakes in Japan almost as regularly as rain. Wardrobes are built into the structure or screwed into the walls. Our expensive stuff is secured to the top of furniture with museum gel, although truth be told it's more for protection against young kids than fear of tremors. Our 250 year old home is made entirely of interlocked & stout trunks of wood with wooden pins, so it shakes but will never topple. There are no brick buildings for dwellings in Japan.

My mum used to tell me that when I was a kid, I thought she was stretching the truth a bit, but obviously not
