How many times have you crashed

If you don't mind, just a little informal survey on how many times you've crashed over the years.

-What was the cause of your wipeout. Be honest :suspicious:

-What was the extent of your injuries if any :crutch:

-What gear were you wearing at the time? :xxx:

 

Cold track, cold tires, too much speed into the corner and too much brake. Leather suit did it's job and one helmet sacrificed itself. A few aspirin took care of it but the real cause was my impatience. Should have taken a few more laps to get up to temps. True on the track or off.

 

Was the helmet cracked or just abraded?

 

Dropped it 9 times but never really crashed. Just about one time though.

Was coming around a right hand decreasing radius curve around a blind knoll with an upwards elevation, trying to keep up with someone I had no business even thinking of trying. A van came around the corner and I then suffered a bad case of target fixation. I was able to stop the bike, completely on the wrong side of the road, and lost my balance and dropped the bike.

I can still picture the faces of the old couple in that old Ford Econoline van when they saw me coming right at them. They managed to go wide which also helped in the collision avoidance. I waved them off, got help picking the bike up, then off we go again after a short chat with the others about the trick. The only thing that broke was the deep tinted Zero Gravity windscreen. I rode it back from Atascadero to Chilliwack and bought a new screen.

That was R3 2009. So it was Reggie's fault.

So, Cause: my stupidity
Injuries: just to my pride.
Gear: Joe Rocket Textile two liece suit and I think a Sharke helmet at that time. ATGATT. None of it was actually needed but was there in any event.

 

No crashes, no injuries. On the street that is. Several dirt bike get-offs but I don't think those count.

But I've only been riding street bikes for 50+ years so it could still happen. :smile-new:

 

Many, many dirt bike crashes. .the worst was landing on my head after flying over a caved in mine shaft...right over the bars..broken collarbone.
Have to admit had a few drinks (scotch) and smoked some hash (lots of Bowl fulls)..then jumped on my Interceptor around 1985 and low sided on the way to the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywierd....very lucky and very stupid...lucky to have survived those wild days. At that age I felt invisible.

Abraded. Sent it to Shoei for an assessment (free service) and they said retire it.

 

way back when I was starting out on my ex500. thought I had more skills than I really had. got into a decreasing radius left hander too fast for my skill level and panic set in, bailed. destroyed my Marushin helmet. Can't remember if I passed out or just laid down after standing up and making sure everything on me worked. either way, woke up to a sherrif standing over me with a flashlight. It had since gotten dark. Was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt with riding gloves. ended up in the ER for a brain check and road rash scrubbing off my back.

second crash. Right out of the Suzuki dealer in February in New York. Just picked up my very first brand new bike, 95 GSXR750. Made sure I rode home REALLY slow for fear of ice. sure enough, low speed low side on black ice. bruised ego and lost paint.

took that same bike a few years later to Korea when stationed there. a Hyundai pulls out in front of me, ironically in front of a cycle shop. large oil slick on the patch of asphalt infront of the shop so down I go trying not to hit the car. bike slid under the rear bumper. And per rule, U.S. military are at 100% fault no matter what. so I paid for the guys bumper and tail pipe. The crappy bike shop was so busy checking out my 750 (they only had 250's back then) to help me up but sure as hell did pick up the bike to check it out. lumps and bumps and totalled bike.

Haven't crashed since. but always have my gear no matter what.

 

I have been very lucky. I have had at least two close calls: (1) someone didn't see me (common) and (2) pushing the bike too hard in the twisties. I know at least two that have died riding, and I have seen a good friend of mine survive a terrifying crash into a ditch caused by gravel on the road.

Once. Rear ended a stopped car waiting to make a left-hand turn. Needed surgery to dislodge a testicle that was pushed in the the lower abdomen due to impact with the gas tank...My passenger got catapulted over the car but somehow ended up landing on his feet with no other injuries than sore heels (some pedestrian saw him fly). Go ahead & poke fun folks...
I was wearing just a helmet, jeans, street leather gloves & jacket. That was when I was young & dumb!

 

Once.. Day after I got my license there was a wind storm (Chinook) and a company just down the road from where I worked had large bags of foam rubber loose in their yard. Each bags was about the size of a midsized car, the wind picked one up and blew it across the road and hit the front wheel of my 84 GS400 then engulfing me and the bike as it ripped open. Ended up with a scraped knee, torn gloves, and the bike was totaled ($1700 damage). Company bought me a new bike (85 GS400E) new gloves,jacket and boots. Had on all the right gear except the pants were my work jeans as I was waiting till the next pay check to get the riding pants.

 

Wow MPH....great company to do thats since of course they were liable. ......did you see the bag before it engulfed you?

 

Nope the Building was L shaped and I didn't see the bag until I passed the side of the building. Road was clear one second, passed the end of the building, big bag jumped out from behind the building and ate me ....

I've been lucky..a few close calls in 40 years. I was in a bike sandwich once, though....Bangkok traffic, going at relatively high speed (60 kmph), a sheet of heavy rain storm came down on us, so I got ready to brake. The motorbike in front of me low-sided in the rain, guy went down. I was ready, so I was able to stop a couple of feet from him. Looking in the rear view mirror, I saw another motorbike behind me trying to stop...he slid right into my car...full impact, as I held onto the brakes (so as to not roll into the guy down in front of me.
I was driving an old Toyota that I brought over from Japan, so the dent only added more character to the car. The biker was ok, a few scrapes and just embarrassed. Same with the guy in front. For them, it was all in a day's work....
