I took the front head off the engine to track down a knock in the top end of #2 only heard when the ambient air temp was over 100°f.

What I found so far is a bad bearing in the cams drive gear, it is flopping around about 3mm side to side and should have 0 play.

I have a spare off of a 13k engine and it should make this 62k engine run quieter than it was especially after I super clean & rebuild the head with new valve seals and a lapping of those valves.

Might be able to rebuild the cam gear drive - depending on the bearing sizes used.

I have a spare idler gear in excellent condition and just replacing it is what the FSM says to do with it also.

My 700F head is in excellent condition internally and the seats look good so I am just doing a quick lap to the exhaust valves and re-assembling with new Viton valve guide seals.

What is nasty is the finish on the front of the cylinders from 30 years of road debris so, I am going to shoot it with some engine paint to make me feel like I did something almost needed.

The new head gasket & few other little parts needed have been ordered and should be in tomorrow morning otherwise I have to wait until Tuesday to get the parts since the dealer went back to old school hours because of the piss poor economy.

Hi Ray, didn't even notice who posted this.
Are the gear drive cassettes bolted or welded together?
Just curious as the VF1000R cassettes are bplted together and can be rebuilt.

They are not rebuild able and I don't see a way to take them apart but, I have a spare, no worries. :triumphant:

    How's things down your way?
All is fantastic here aside from the drought, I'm a happy camper. :cool-new:

All good down here. Having fun with with my "new" 94 VFR.
Not had any time to work on the old bikes for a while.

    I sold my VFR1200F a few months back & bought an 85 Yota 4x4 and will be selling my VFR700F as soon as she runs again and sticking with my "old" bikes like my mind blowingly awesome Schüle piped CBX, '73 CB450K with sidehack and anon running 66 Trail 90 I bought last spring at Willow Springs Raceway Vintage motorcycle races swap meet for $160.00 just for shitz & giggles. {The Trail 90 has a new to it carburetor, a 1st over piston & rings with a fresh bore now and a 6volt AGM battery, she runs like a raped ape.}
The new bikes don't have that feel, they don't have that soul and they have way too much plastic covering up that thumping & pumping heart.
How is the collection looking now a days and how many bikes do you have in total?

Cleaning the carbs yesterday I found the bung for bolting the left side carbs together is snapped off so I have to either try and have it welded by my wizard welding fanatic or buy another bank of carbs for this bike now too, PITA.

Rode the bike after rebuilding the front cylinder head and replacing the idler gear but, now I want to replace the rear idler gear also.
The engine responds a lot better and is more powerful but, the rear cylinder head makes noises similar to what the front use to make so, it has to come apart & get fixed.

Still got a few as listed in my "My Ride" panel. I have added a CT110 to the list and have found I sort of have a second CB1100F. realised once you have a frame, motor, body work, wheels, electricals and brakes, then you actually have to count it as a bike. Using the same logic I have also got three unlisted CB900 projects down the shed as well. The 94 VFR is almost the perfect bike though. Perhaps I should buy a spare?

YES!!! You can become the "whoremaster" of Gen 4 bikes down under...:loco: I am the "whoremaster" of Gen 3 bikes in South FL, if you ever come down here, the FL Keys cry oot. I don't like new chit either, if it don't have carburetors, its really not for me. Fly by wire bikes lack the soul and feel of cables attatched to carbs. The Germans were doing FI bikes years ago, actually learned alot aboot FI working on them. Now, I just stick to what I got, a thumper may be in my future or heaven forbid a carbureted sportster :loco:

    Cheers.
