    Went thru the rack again, see no signs of cam or rocker wear. Dunno, just noisier than I think it should be.
    Thinking of selling her anyway, been unemployed since May and could use the money.

    Did you pull the cams to inspect? You cannot see rocker wear without doing that.

    Just read through this entire thread. Well done. Nice to see another V4 brought back.

    Thanks, though I wish it were done. Very frustrated trying to work on the top end. Everything looked very good upon assembly. Not really sure how much more effort/money I want to put into it.

    Cam Follower Groove

    I've had the same problem, on 2 different engines.
    Loud Ticking from one Cylinder. Front left on one engine, Rear Right on another engine.
    Cannot be adjusted out. Like Jamie says, can't see it without disassemble.

    The Cam Lobe is damaged;

    And the matching Cam Follower is Grooved (right);

    There is still a Cam Grind service available in California, that will Weld/Regrind the Cam Follower, for $68USd each (September Price).
    A full set of Cams for rework was $680 USd
    I'll be sending down a job (whenever the Exchange Rate gets better). With Gaskets and all, it'll probably cost me $1000 to restore one motor.
    So, is it worth a Grand to have a bike refreshed for another 10 years?, 20 years?,,.. I think so,,. I love the bike.
    I've finished Walnut Shell Blasting, Dremeling, Filing and Hand Lapping the Heads. Was at Buddies yesterday and previewed his Milling Machine.
    Will be milling the head to make it flat (it ain't anymore). Only need to take 1 or 2 thou off.
    New Head Gaskets arrived. Winter project. Time & Money, always in short supply,,..

    Maybe I should give a bit more thorough background on this engine. The bike was in pieces when I purchased it, the cams and caps were out of the heads, but the rest of the valvetrain was intact. It has 38,000 miles and the cams and rockers all looked good.
    I guess I am a bit confused with the possibility of cam/rocker wear, since all the posts that I have ever seen about this issue says that generally if they are good at 10,000 or 20,000 that there shouldn't be an issue.
    I understand that if something becomes a problem, it has to start at some point, but it just seems odd to me that all of a sudden I have encountered a rocker issue. I would be completely shocked if I have a rocker that looks like your example after only 150-160 miles, none of them looked to have any wear prior.
    Also, when I turn the engine over by hand I can hear a tick, can't remember if it is every revolution, or every other. I know I have seen a thread that there was discussion of this but I can't seem to find it.

    I am really not at the point of being able to put $600- 1000 into the top end of this bike right now, and not too sure if I will whenever I get back to working either. I already have much more in it than it is worth even if I were to keep it for many years.

    I am thankful for the responses, and I'm sure at some point I will get digging back into it, but it may not be for a while.

    Still working out of town, but managed to get the bike to my dads as he offered to work on it. We had already decided to get new tensioners and chains, started on that process, pulled the cams to get a look at things and Jamie was right, there are 2 rockers that are worn, 1 of them is just flaking now, so the cams and rockers are off to get done. Dad also surprised me with a Dodge top end oil kit, so it is on now too. Sure hope this cures my ills with the bike, only thing left to update is the forks. Thanks Jamie and Dave Dodge for the help. Also a pic of a 73 cl450 we found, hope to make into a more modern looking Scrambler! 040.jpg 043.jpg 030.jpg

    Been very occupied with work lately but we were finally able to get the cams, rockers, chains and tensioners back in. The bike is finally back together, now I just have to get some time in to ride it a little bit. Working 100 miles out of town, 6 12 hour days, sundays off and I drive home to spend a little time with the wife. She thinks I should go ahead and sell the bike because I havent even been able to ride the ones that are here, let alone the vf. Cant say that I completely disagree. Not sure if this is ok here on this thread, but if anyone is interested in this give me a holler. Will try to post some better pics next week when I am home again if that helps.
