So what are the best rides San Diego County has to offer. I'm one week into my trip from Colorado & am camping at the Banning KOA tonight. Today I rode 243 through Idlewild and to both ends of Hwy 74. The trips up from each end (Desert Palms & Valle Vista) were great as well as most of 243. I'm looking for more like this. I'm planning to ride a loop from Banning to Big Bear Lake (hwy 38 to hwy 18) tomorrow & then move down to Oceanside to visit my cousins.

Also Palomar Mtn is on the list, but not on the weekend. Any other suggestions?

I also rode a few days in AZ on the way here. The ride from Prescott to Jerome (89A) is a short little slice of heaven. The 10 mile trip quickly became 40. Also Hwy 191 from Eagar to Morenci (240 miles round trip) was a real workout but great fun.

Where is derstuka when you need him? I'm sure he would know the roads down there. Definitely hit up Palomar and maybe ride into Julian and/or Santa Ysabel. You still coming up my way for the tire change? If the timing is right I can show you the roads in Malibu, or Angeles Forrest maybe.

So many possibilities. You just need to hire me and I will show you more twisties than you can shake a stick at! :bootyshake2: I am assuming you are gonna hit the trail early (I recommend prior to 6:30am departure time, especially because of camp pendleton base traffic), and you don't mind a bit of heat (desert). I would leave by 6am, as the first section on the 76 will be choked with traffic going to the casinos later. Check out the Google map that I made and see what you think.....it will keep you busy for a good 6-8 hours. Like I said, so many options, but this is a pretty decent one.

Places of interest to stop for sight-seeing, and/or chow are (but not limited to): Mother's Kitchen at the top of Palomar Mtn, Julian - Miner's diner, Julian Cafe, or just Mom's for apple pie and cinnamon ice cream (yummy), Carlee's in Borrego Springs (hard to miss, but good food), Dudley's in Santa Ysabel for more apple pie and pasties.

I can get you out of the desert if you prefer, however, it should not be too bad....in the high 80's to low 90's prior to noon. Just make sure to bring plenty of water, some snacks, flat repair kit, and if all else fails and you are SOL, call stuka. Chew on it, and let me know if this tickles your fancy.

This road map looks like distorted boobies in a weird way linky

Thanks for the response guys. I'll be doing at least two days of rides in the SD county area. Also, OOTV, I've got 3,500 miles on the stock tires and will definitely need to mount up the new ones next week. I'll contact you next week to see if we can meet at your convenience.

    Thanks again.

So I had the honor of meeting Chief today and got to work on his new 2014! Spooned on some brand new PR4's f/r and got him on his way. Looks like he'll be enjoying the roads of Malibu next and I sure wish I could join him today! Anyway, I'm glad I could assist you Chief and I hope you have a nice stay up in the BU! Make sure you take it easy for the first few miles, new rubber and all.

Here's Chief with his 2014 with the new shoes!

I see Chief is trying to make the new rubber last as long as possible by pushing his bike everywhere. Smart man. So, Chief, how'd OOTV's dog treat you?

Home from my trip now and wish to thank OOTV for his expert tire mounting skills and ride suggestions in the Malibu area. In all I covered over 1,900 of mostly twisty canyon and mountain roads in CO, AZ CA and UT on the VFR and 2,600 miles of trailering in the GMC van.
The most fun road sections that I found were in CA and consisted of:
Hwy 74 Valle Vista to Mtn. Center (up & down)
Hwy 74 Palm Desert to Santa Rosa Reservation (up & down)
    Latigo Canyon (down only)
Mulholland Hwy (out & back several times)
Hwy 33 from Ojai to Ozeno Station (out & back several times) The section from the National Forest campground just outside of Ojai for about 8 miles was, in my opinion, the most fun of all. Great road surface, banked turns, wider roadway & little traffic (weekdays). Except for the lane marker cutouts that encroach on the apexes of lefthanders, this would have been perfect.
The most challenging day for me was in AZ from Springerville to Morenci, a 118 mile stretch of Hwy 191 (Devil’s Hwy) that I rode out & back. Nearly 240 miles of mountain & canyon road, high speed sweepers to gnarly switchbacks & everything in between.
    Here are a few photos:

Glad you made it home OK Chief. I wish I could have joined you in Malibu, it's one of my favorite spots to ride. Heck, I wish I could have joined you period! I'm sure you'll find the PR4s a good tire and should last you longer than the Dunlops we took off.
