How would one go about testing the other components on the PCB? like the zener diodes mentioned above? Or the white thingamahoozit next to our DOA resistor?

The zeners and the other resistor are quite hardy and are probably fine. It wouldn't hurt to meter R2 to make sure that it's not open. I would be more concerned with the runs on the back side.

I don't know if this is taking the 'easy' way out, but I just bought a 'parts quality' meter set for $39 shipped.

My soldering skills are inadequate at best and I have never done any PCB work. If the meter is $40 sunk, I'll try my hand at it.

Also, Shorai finally got back to me and they are supposed to call me tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath, though...

Well, the trashed instrument cluster paid off. The speedo PCB was perfect. I will re-install the cluster tonight along with the VFRNess that I also ordered. I really want to do everything I can to not go through this again.

If anyone needs 4G cluster parts, lmk. I have all gauges, the clock, and the bulbs/colored lenses for sale.

I also want to say (as others have said before) what a HIGH QUALITY piece the VFRNess is. Beautiful and rugged wiring sub harness!!

Well, I'm beginning to feel like this thread is dead. Opening a new thread for my speedo woes.

The snow finally melted enough so that I could get into my shed. I have good news and bad news. I swapped the CDI into my bike, just to confirm that it was toast, or not. It started right up and ran perfectly.

With that news, there is not much sense, or ability to troubleshoot something that works fine.

I'll send the OP an email, to let him decide it's fate.

    I tried, cheers.

Maybe it just likes being up north more...

It's yours now - I have a running bike here in SC. Sell or give away - your call.

    Thanks for the effort!

Well that does not answer any of the questions, what else did you replace that might have been the cause, something in the dash?, what else did you replace? if it works up north no reason why it wouldn't work down south. Be nice to know why, after so much effort was put into it

Sometimes just reseating a connector can clean a little surface corrosion off the pins to make it work again. That, or the problem could be in the harness, that disappeared when he moved it around. Just another unsolved mystery of the wonderful VFR.

I would have thought the unit would have been unplugged many times so I guess the connectors would not be the problem, unless it was a connector in the original harness, so my guess replacing the harness was the fix. Anyway good to know all is fixed now
