84 700, clutch action

    Read this on the "New 2014 VFR800" :


    I have to rev my bike higher than I'd like to and slip the clutch longer too. Is it geared taller like the bikes mentioned or is there something wrong with the clutch?- or me.

    I haven't noticed that on mine but I guess I never really payed super close attention. Next time I ride I'll pay close attention. Can you let off the clutch without throttle without stalling the engine? Even if you let off slow?

    Are you certain your brakes aren't dragging?

    I don't have to pay close attention, it's obvious to me this bike is different. Maybe it's just the weight.

    Engine will stall if I don't give it gas if that's what you mean. It idles at 1500. Don't think the brakes are dragging.

    Hmmm...Well....the only other road bike I have any real time on is my KZ1000, and that's a heavy beast also. So my experience may not be enough to tell the difference.....but I do think I can let off the clutch from a stop without the engine dying. Not in a normal takeoff, but if being careful.

    Carbs being out of sync will affect how the engine runs at very small throttle openings....maybe that's it?

    I have ridden a hardley a few times, and on those you can almost dump the clutch at idle without killing it...I think that's about the only thing they have going for them. :playful:

    The carbs haven't been synced since rebuild. Maybe that's it. Starting to think it might just be me.

    I rode today and paid attention to the clutch work. I have mine set to idle at 1250. During takeoff I rev the motor to round about 1800-1900 and slip the clutch there until moving. Maybe 5-10 ft or so, doesn't take long, but I didn't actually pay attention to that distance, just guessing. I'll have to try again and see about how far it takes until I let off the clutch.

    Are you revving the motor higher than 2k to get moving?

    My carbs are for sure off sync right now. I just adjusted the valve clearances and it threw them off. But I don't really notice any problems from it that cause me to have to slip the clutch more than before.

    idle at 1500? I have my 86 700 idling after warm up at around 800... sync the carbs and check for leaks in your boots...

    Service manual says idle speed on 1984 VF700 is 1200 +/- 100, so 1500 is too fast but not by a terrible amount.
