My grandfather had hearing loss in his left ear and so did my dad. I too have significant hearing loss in the left ear. I thought it was generic but we all spent significant time driving cars with the windows down. (Summers in Texas with no AC) My thinking is this really effected our hearing. The wind rushing by that ear is pretty loud and could account for the deafness.

It may still be genetic. I Imagine there'd be an "epidemic" of single-sided hearing loss otherwise. Driving with the window down is not unique to Texas. Maybe a predisposition to hearing loss from that? My mother has serious hearing loss. She refuses to wear her hearing aids which will make for interesting Thanksgiving dinner conversation. I've noticed my hearing starting to go. I accept the fact that one day I'll also need hearing aids. I'm not too proud to wear them though. I'll just take them out when I screw up (like I'm prone to do) and my wife starts yelling at me.

I have hearing loss in my right ear that I can attribute to driving. "You are driving too fast. Look out for that stop sign! You missed a turn. You are following too close!"
