My turn for the stoopid wires

    2008 model 27000 miles -
    I was going to wire up a Fuzeblock so that I can install a Blues Sea USB socket, a voltmeter, and my Autocom. Start looking things over.
    Main 30 amp fuse holder brown on one side, well crap.

    Pulled the starter magnet connection and one of the connections corroded and the connector burnt, well double crap.

    So i have decided its time to cover my butt. Will run the drill ASAP, Will order the VFRness as soon as I get a few spare bucks, will check the R/R yellow wire connection and correct (not sure what route to take with that one yet, soldier, Posi-Lock connectors, or stator hardwire kit from wiremybike). Hopefully I caught things before more damage is done and its a good thing there is still snow on the ground. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement connector for the starter magnet?

    Well at least you caught it.

    My suggestion would be to solder the 3 yellows from the R/R to the stator.

    As Pilskin says forget the connector, they are crap, just not able to cope with the heat, just solder the wires and heatshrink them, looks like you have saved your butt, hopefully

    There are a few options other than soldering. Higher current connectors are a workable option.

    I really like the Posi-lock connectors and use them when ever i can. Will have to look up the specs on the though for this application.

    I am going to consider myself "lucky" at this point. Didn't have time to run the drill last night but did pull the right side fairing and pulled connectors, no signs of melting, burning, corrosion, nada. Still thinking about replacing with the Posi-Locks or a direct solder. Will make a decision once I have run the drill. At this point not sure the VFRness is needed but I do want to get a replacement connector for the starter magnet and change the 30 amp main fuse holder.

    I'm not sure what you call Posi-Locks but if they are what I think they are I would solder every time

    Hilbily, the VFRness IS needed! If I remember correctly all the amperage for charging goes through the fuse holder that is turning brown. With VFRness you add a 20 amp fuse that runs from R/R directly to the battery for charging. Then you replace the 30 amp fuse in the lightly burnt fuse holder with a 20, thus insuring you will blow a 20 amp fuse before a 30 amp fuse and also the 20 will blow before your connectors and wires fry.

    The guy at VFRness is very helpful and answered every email I sent him. Do yourself a favor and contact him with any questions and concerns!

    I never had the recall on my 2007. I have 22,000 miles on the clock. Putting the bike away for the winter in fall of 2013 I had a 3" piece of wire leading from a connecter to the main B Fuse holder, (the same holder that is turning brown on ypur bike) melt. I got so hot I thought the wire was black. Turns out it was red and turned black from the heat. I replacded the short section of wire and did "The Drill". I added the VFRness to reroute some of the load away from that connector and Fuse. That holder now uses a 20 amp fuse instead of the 30 it came with and the VFRness runs a line directly from the RR to the battery which also uses a 20 amp fuse. Anytime you can lower the amperage of a fuse you take additional pressure off the wiring harness as well. The 20 amp will blow before the wires get too hot!

    Send an email to the guy at wire my bike and he will be very helpfull in answering any of your questions.

    Thanks for all the info. I cleaned all my connections good and added oxguard. As soon as i can get a few bucks freed up ill get the vfrness And a better connector for the 3 yellow wires. hopefully that will all happen very soon.

    Got it all cleaned up and hooked back up. Replaced the red starter connector with a new one. Took it out for about a 2 mile run yesterday. New volt meter was indicating 14.1 volts at idle and never changed up to 6k or 7k with low beams on. Flipped on the high beams and I dropped to 13.8 volts. Would these numbers alarm anyone else? I still plan on the VFRness and removing/replacing the yellow wires connection.
