Dan, put the flash first and remove the Zbomb, it will run so much better.

Suspension and all other things your come AFTER fixing the computer.
The problem of this bike IS the computer.

I run with the standard suspension, and it's not that bad.
The thing is the computer kicks to full power after about 5000RPM, that means the suspension gets a major torque to work with.
After the flash the power kicks in quite linear as such the standard suspension is pretty good.

Fix the computer first, then fiddle with the rest.

Did you ever rode a flashed bike? No, then ride one first.
There is no comparison, sorry there isn't.
It turns a bike into what it should have been.

All the people that have flashed it will tell you the same. Zbomb is crap, fix the computer as the computer is the problem.

I've ridden plenty of flashed bikes. Flashes are changes made by 3rd parties that have done less than 1% (if any) of the research that was performed by the OEM. They certainly don't improve long term reliability.

I'd be inclined to flash the ECM on a track bike if I was trying to shave tenths off my lap times. But faster throttle response on a street bike doesn't necessarily make it more street-able.

Sure, but this is a VFR1200, and it makes a huge difference.
Sorry mate, you have no clue what you are talking about, else you would have given a different response.

Do you even have a 1200? As the change is so big, you wouldn't even start this argument.
The 1200 without a flash is a shit bike, after it's the best bike ever.

Or could be you never rode a good bike before, a lot of modern bikes ride really crappy.
Modern bikes have CO2 and other "green" crap in them, they are not more green then old bikes, but they have "green" crap in them, making them run shit but green.

Remove it and they run good, we old folks (me 49 and riding since my 16th), try an old bike, they run so much better.
Today they sell bikes on HP, but look at the dynorun and they suck.

Flash the ECU, then come back to me and tell me this again....if you can.
You never rode a 1200 with a flash, so much is sure.

I did, and by default the VFR800Fi runs a lot better then a VFR1200.
    2000 800 versus 2010 1200, the 800 wins.....until.......

I just bought a 2010 and they are thousands less than their younger brothers.

Also, all of this talk about reflashing the bike is a bit strong - it clearly does a few things, including what the Z-Bomb does (removing the ignition retard as programmed at the factory), allowing you to remove the servo motor for the exhaust flap without setting off an alarm/dummy light, removing top speed restriction, changing temp for fan to turn on, changing RPM limit (if you dare, read somewhere this is a BAD idea given the type of valves on the bike) AND what Bas appears to be talking about - changing the fuel map. There are lots of ways to change the fueling - I've never understood them, but there is the Power Commander and the Bazzaz version, etc., but for the extra benefits of the reflash, I agree it is an attractive mod.

But to call this bike crap without the reflash is a bit harsh - the motor still shines through, the brakes are brilliant, and the refinement of the 1200 (I'm coming from an '06 Sprint ST) make it a great bike with or without the reflash.

And yes, I've changed the chip in my Tuono 2x, huge difference - I've reflashed my old Daytona 675 AND my SPrint and yes, it makes a difference. But it doesn't make a bike. Maybe the improvement is bigger on the 1200, but to say the bike is crap without it ignores so many nice things about the big VFR...

Yes it changes the fuelmap, but also the ignition timings as well as the throttle response.
There is a lot of "green" stuff in the ECU and you can't take those out without changing the ECU programming.
Zbomb and powercommander do a tiny part of what the flash will do, it's very hard to explain but the ECU is programmed to satisfy the "green stuff" and not to optimize the workings of the bike.
It has dips in power for sound-levels and CO2 measurements, it has throttle-delay in such a way that on a roundabout you get into trouble because it takes to long to respond.
Take your bike up into the mountains (fully packed and/or with a passenger) and hope you can ride good enough to keep you from crashing, as it's that bad.

Yeah the bike looks very good until these quirks hit you when you don't expect them, it's not just the fuelmap, it's the green stuff in the ECU and the throttle-delay that you should be worried about.
In the 2012 version Honda did change the delay a bit, but it's still there.

When it happens to you, you go like this: What the hell, where is my power gone?
So you open the throttle a bit more and all of a sudden all the power is there and you will have big time keeping yourself from crashing, if you didn't almost fell before.
On a normal road with just traffic lights you never notice this, but on steep corners and small roundabouts (especially being packed), you notice soon enough. We all did.

Either you are talking about the 1st & 2nd gear power restriction (solved with the Z Bomb), or there was something wrong with your motorcycle. No one else is almost crashing because of the stock ECM.

    Sorry I'm not.
Friend of mine with a DCT 1200 also 2010 has the same problem, his solution prior to the flash was to give a bit more throttle and brake at the same time to keep the power.
Another friend of mine noticed the same, but he had his BMW set to rain-mapping and it acted exactly the same, took him by surprise too, after setting his bike to sports-mapping the issue was solved.
But the VFR can't be set without modifying the ECU.
It is not the 1&2 restriction doing this.

Funny is, journalists of motor magazines have noticed this as well and complained about this behavior.

Just wait until it happens to you, then you know what it is.

    Any links?

Perhaps there is something related to the emissions regulations in Belgium? I've ridden thousands of miles in tight technical hilly back roads & I can tell you my USA spec bike does not do that.

For those who may have missed this post.. ( I did) Good stuff. The database covers older bikes too.

In Belgium the VFR1200 has a ECU that is restricted to 115hp (per Don Guhl). The stock US ECU makes much more power.
While Bas has gotten a big gain in power from a reflash, the gains on a US spec bike are much smaller.

Wrong. Belgium has 2 versions, restricted to 115HP and fullpower of 173HP.
But I wasn't talking about power, I was talking about handling.
Also the bike I was referring to is a Dutch bike with 173HP.
The handling of both bikes is poor and looks like any other bike with rain mapping.
