I just purchsed a 2007 VFR800 with under tail exhausts. I also just purchased a set of soft saddle bags but am concerned about the heat from the exhaust pipes. There are areas where the bag is probably less than 1/2" from the heat shield that covers the pipes. The manufacturer of the bags (Tourmaster) states a minimum clearance of 2" is required.

However, there's a heat shield that wraps around the exhausts. My question is, does enough heat dissipate before reaching the heat shield so as not to create a problem or, does it in fact get just as hot as the exhaust? I'm a woos and don't want to find out by touching the heat shield and getting burned and would hate to melt a new set of bags. :)

    Thanks!

Factory hard bags.. The only way to go. You could make a silicone shield that might work. Think hot pad from the kitchen.

Don't worry at all. Mine made three trips from Canada to near Mexico on the Cortech (Tourmaster) soft bags. The heat shield is more than sufficient to prevent any damage so long as you are moving. I would not leave my bike standing at an idle for hours on end though. Like anyone would do that anyways.

I have OEM hardbags now only because that is what I want, but I do not regret buying the sift bags. They served me very well. Another VFRW member now has my soft bags. He uses them on his 4th gen I think.

Oh I forgot. Ice-cream bars will not stand up in thiese bags. Heat is a bitch on them.

Cool! Most of those and the cookware hold up to as much as 600F. The stuff makes great gaskets too.
