I added maybe 3.5 qts at the most and the window says its over filled. I then drain a little out-it still looks over filled-the whole window is filled with oil. How long does the oil even out? I mean this window shit is a big pain in the ass. it ended up being a little over filled last time too but not much. the manual says 3.3 qts. It could be my floor is screwing me up too. Because I know I have at least three qts-I think the answer is get the bike real level on the stand-and check it then.

How straight is the broom handle? That might be the problem

If you haven't started the bike yet, the Oil filter may not have any oil in it yet. Start it up and let it idle a while, then turn off the motor and let the oil settle, then check the window. If still high, take out some 10-40, but leave make sure you leave the 05-40w in there, that should solve the issue.

Are we correct to assume the bike is on the center stand?

What do you think? "I think the answer is get the bike real level on the stand-and check it then. "

P1010088.jpg P1010087.jpg Its my floor being so screwed up-I drained some out, then drained a little more-its very close now. I will have to ride it to a real flat parking lot-I had trouble the last time too. My Broom handle lift is not good for checking oil level. I had to do the same thing last oil change too.:whoops: At least I didn't over tighten the drain plug like Randy does, the plastic panels suck too. I don't care at least the new oil and filter are in there-I may have to adj the oil level again after I check it in a parking lot at least the drain plug is easy to get at.:frusty: Oh you may not want to ride a train for a while-a piece of train track is missing-I needed it to use as a counter weight:twitch:

Once you get the oil level figuered out, its time for some chain maintenance.

nothing wrong with chain its all most brand new, it looks like not all the oil drains out, so 3.4 qts is a bit too much, it seems to take maybe 3.1 qts. Might be my broom stand lift might upset the draining of old oil. I get it right-I take a sucking device to pull out a little oil if its still over filled to a level parking lot-the things I do for a oil change ug ug its BB fault.:spider:

BB and Randy jinxed me, I all always have trouble with plastic panels, but my Yamaha had a reg dip stick-this window shit is new to me. I don't think its a bad design, just it makes it harder to get the correct oil level. I have figured everything out, but it seemed to be a lot of extra work I shouldn't have to do. Why can't they make fasteners more easy and if I still had that charcoal canister-another piece of shit-the first thing I put in the closet -to be never ever used again-then fix the stupid gas tank lines so they go into the air. And I sent to closet that stupid stock seat and 20pound s of mufflers. All this so I could at least be able to ride it. Well the r6 had its bugs too-pain in carbs-jetted to lean-no cat though. On the vfr to most important thing is to learn how to do a great oil change. I have decide just make the dam thing work and forget how it looks because I don't care what any one thinks any more about my bike-it works well then I like it.

I cannot speak for Randy but it amazes me that SOW would speak ill of both of us after we took the time and trouble to research and send SOW several recipes for deep fried cat and the Bruce Jenner posters.

Changed my oil today, bike level on centre stand, engine warm, filter off and let it drain for 30 mins or so. Took 3.6 litres (3.7 quarts) to top mark on level window after letting idle for 10 mins.

Beats me why my 06 took maybe 3.1 qts, I put in maybe 3.4 qts and it was too much. It now looks like the oil is change ok-I am between the lines, but I chipped the plastic panel-ok well at least I haven't been dropping the bike any more.

I own that one! I didn't just over tighten it. I stripped the mutha fugga.

I still don't understand why you feel you need to put a wheel stand under your rear wheels when doing an oil change. The bike naturally rest fairly heavily on the front wheel while on the centre stand. Am I missing something here?

BTW, if you need to support your rear wheel and can do it with an old broom handle the way you came up with, good on you. If it work, it works. If it is cheap, well I'm a Scottie. I like deals.

    WTF!!
From the picture, it looks like you have a centre stand, why the F#%@K use a rear broom stick stand?
    Am I missing something?
I just realised who the poster is, I don't know how I get sucked into these posts, I just can't help it.

Didn't you know the vfr has a single wing arm? How else can you use a reg stand in the back without the broom, ? Don't for get to take a piece of train track for the counter weight from your local train company-the train won't miss that little bit-might be a bit jarring though.:moony:

so you're lifting the rear wheel higher than it would when on the centre stand right?
If so, where do you think the oil will go?...that's right...to the front of the motor!
Then when it's on it's wheels it will most likely show over filled.
Use the centre stand provided...place on level ground.
    Drain oil and remove filter.
Install sump plug. It has a soft metal sealing washer so nip it up, don't Gorilla it!
Smear oil on new filter O ring and screw it on HAND tight. Feel it snug up then NO MORE than half a turn or it will pop the O ring...seen it three times this year, oil all over the bike and rear tyre...Yikes!
Fill to full mark...run the bike for 15-30 seconds.
    Switch off.
Now the filter is full...an option is to fill the filter with fresh before fitting.
Grab a coffee and enjoy it.
check the level and top up a little at a time until at or just below full mark.
    You're done.
Don't fill by quantity...fill by watching.
Oh, different viscosity oils makes no difference. Certainly don't mix them in the motor.

    Hope that helps.
