Just got into the VFR repair & maintenance . I also drive an e30 bimmer (my caged horse) and know that other enthusiasts are very specific about their oil. I generally use Mobil 1 15-50...sometimes 0W-40 so I don't strain the oil pump as much.

Anyone extremely partial to a particular brand/type of oil for the Viffer?

We here at VFRWorld no longer answer the dreaded "what oil do yu use threads" because of the massive amount of damage that is inflicted on our mind, body and souls.

It is a little know fact that most of the worlds conflicts began from the beginning of the 20th Century to now as a result of "Who has the best oil" In fact, WWII started because Germany claimed it had superior oil over Britain, the U.S. and Russia. And right now Isreal is blasting Palesitinian gunmen because Palistine claims their synthetic oil is the best, and I have to admit, their marketing campaign is pretty convincing! And of course we are in Iraq because 'they say' 9/11, but when you look at the facts, its all about oil.

So D.C. in the interest of saving lives and keeping another conflict, war, fist fight from breaking out, we just can't answer this thread.

(Hope you laughed! I use Amsoil 10W-40 fully sythetic motorcycle oil).

Runner up on Nozzle's funniest thread of the day

This thread is why the "deadhorse" smilie is on the list.

    :deadhorse:

thanks to bubba and MD for their contributions to my Friday afternoon smile. Please let the horse run free on a new thread, like what chain lube you use.

    :llama:

(yeah, it's actually a llama, but squint and it's a horse)
and I've used Honda Pro for the 3K miles my bike's seen.

I know I'm gonna get blasted cause I'm a new member, but take my advise and stick to factory reccomendations and use conventional oil. A friend of mine used synthetic in his SV 1000, and now has clutch problems. Bike was fine until the change. I've been an auto mechanic for many years and have seen all types of issues with people who have used synthetic oils - from leaks, to noises, to oil burning. Don't get me wrong, I think it's okay if reccomended, but it can also cause issues if it's not! Think about it. Standard oils have been used for years without problems, why fix what ain't broke?

I recently had to ask myself this question. When my 07 was due it's first oil change, what to put in it? The Dealer put Bel-Ray in it when I picked it up new. I decided to go with Honda's advice and use their GN4 10W/40. I figured, they designed it, so they should know best.

I run my bikes to 7500-9000 on dino and then switch over to synth Mobil1
    10w-40 motorcycle specific oil.

The other school of thought in this forum is to go ahead and jump to synth after the first break-in oil change. Myself I'm not comfortable doing that.

    amsoil here, too.

I was thinking of trying that rotella then I saw the recent thread about them chainging it on the vfr mailing list so I'm still with amsoil right now... I really think the more important thing is the routine changing rather than the brand of oil, though.

P.S., DC, I was born in Fredneck and raised in Thurmont. Attended FCC for a semester before deciding it sucked and "going off to see the world" with an M4 in my hand, an M9 on my hip and a stethescope around my neck.

just visited my parents there last week. They live in Clover Hill II off of Opposumtown Pk. Anyway, good to meet you. Welcome.

Asking a man what oil is best is probably like asking a woman what shampoo works best. To me, conventional is fine for normal use, and normal oil change intervals, and it doesn't mean that your engine will break down if you use it, however, using something formulated to extend that life and reduce wear can be better for your engine. Especially if a person is a very aggressive high revving hard rider, or a racer. I do believe that some synthetic oils hold up better than others, and have a stronger molecular bonds & structure. I used to be a Mobil One man years ago, but have since switched with Redline oil. I do use conventional in my truck, because cars are primarily lower rpm's than a 11k rpm bike. Those little pistions are moving so fast up and down, I want to make sure they have the best stuff they can to keep doing their job right.

As far as your friend having clutch problem's with synthetic, he needs to ensure that the synthetic that he is using is motorcycle specific and/or has reduced friction modifier's, as some oils do, like my Redline oil. Also ensure that no teflon additives or anything in it. If you run such an oil, no problems should arise.

As someone stated though, with most oils, change intervals is more important than what brand, but I will always be a hold out and keep in mind that some are better than others....

I like Rotella. I use it daily in a fleet of semi-trucks. We change it every 10,000 miles (these trucks hold 13 gallons of oil!). I read in a magazine a few years ago that Rotella worked very well in bikes. The trucks punish oil in every way you can think of except rpm's. They redline at 2100rpm. I've never used it in a bike, but it takes these trucks to well over a million miles!

    Oily hair thread

[note that this is a paradody and not what derstuka actually typed ]

Derstuka has the right idea I think, if you read this thread as discussing oily hair and how often to shampoo, you may see why I find oil threads amusing. then again you may not.... your mileage may vary, unless you use {_your_brand__here_} Oil and conditioner.... what oil condition do you use? STP?
