    Hey guys,

Need some help, last night I decided to do an Oil change.... after i was done and all was checked and tightend.... turned on the bike and had a knocking noise that seems to be coming from the front left side of the block..... i seem to go away when the engine is at operating temp.... wnet for a short ride and no issues what so ever... but i am worried that this may be the prelude to bigger issues... and i am riding to the tail of the dragon this coming week....

    Would really apreciate some ideas

    Thank you

Cam chain tensioner? Do you have enough oil in there? Between the lines on the sight window. Usually at it just over 3 liters.

When the CCT 's started knocking onmy2004 it was VERY clearly from the right hand side of the engine when seated on the bike
And the OP states the noise is coming from the left front of the motor

I have seen people mistake a leaking header pipe gasket for a knocking noise that goes away when hot

It sounds like this was a prominent new noise that he had not hear before. Why now?

Yeah that could be it. Thats really easy to diagnose. What till engine is cold. Start. Then feel for leaks with your hand. Be quick and try and feel all four out before you burn the shit out of your self lol.

Oh when you wrote "nothing new there" I thought you meant "ignore it, it is no big deal." That was the context of my (dumb sounding) reply.

Guys thank you all for your replies... I rode it yesterday and it's moving fine... the sound is present when cold but goes away when it get to temperature.... how difficult can it be to replace the CCT? just to get an idea... the bike only has 19k

Thank you again for your replies

5 minutes for the rear cct. An hour or two for the front, depending on how comfortable you are with lifting the gas tank and pulling out the air box.

Cct's will quiet up after the bike warms up and oil starts flowing.

19,000 miles is a little early but not unheard of.

Yup it seem to be the norm...now i did a quick check on it and the oil level does seem a little higher than normal.... through out the trip to NC the bike behaved beautifully... i like the bike when i left home.... i am loving it when i cam back.. rode the dragon twice, the Charahala Skyway, the Blue ridge parkway, moonshiners 28 and crossed the smokey mountains.. the bike was a joy to ride... i love it and hoping to keep it for a very long time... will look at the other suggestions... and will report back.....

Best way to avoid ugly noise after an oil change is to pre-fill the oil filter so your bike doesn't run with dry bearings for 15-20 seconds. It can be done, up to 1/2 quart in filter before mounting with very little spillage.

    Great tip.
My Dad showed me to do this and I've done it for the last 35 years.

Ive done this on bikes and cars with filters are hang upside down but isnt always possibly without making a mess on ones where it sits sideways like the most bikes.

True but filter elements hold a large amount of oil before they gets to the point where it will pour out. Add a small amount of oil, leave it to absorb, rinse, repeat. It does take extraordinary patience to just leave the filter sit for a few minutes. But add some oil to the filter the first thing you do and that helps.

Even if you only fill the filter enough to soak the element it is far better than a bone dry filter. Maybe you get a few drops but that's easier to sort out than bearings.
