Should I buy a 2010 or a later year?

What year VFR1200 should I get?
There seems to be a lot more 2010s available, and they cost less.
But the 2012+ have traction control, but are there any other benefits to getting a later model?
Did Honda sort out any issues on the later ones that were present on the first ones?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks, Al.

Currently I have an ST1300 but I am itching to change to the VFR1200 :)

I've only ridden a 2010. The grip and traction are quite good. I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I would have needed TC and I ride it pretty hard.

There really isn't much difference between the 2010 and the 2012+. I think there is a small software difference on the dashboard that gives you the "miles until empty" that is kinda nice. From the conversations I have had with other 7th gen owners is that the traction control is rudimentary at beast. It was added on as an afterthought. There may also be a few software changes on the ECU between them as well, but many people have either flashed them anyway or they want to flash them soon (like me). No matter what year you decide on getting, it is an awesome bike though!

I'm sure you already know, but the VFR1200 is not a replacement for the ST1300. I mean, sure... you can tour on it, but the ST1300 is a mile devouring monster in comparison.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like at 2010 would be just fine for me since the changes are not that significant, plus 2010's are cheaper and there are more of them in the classified listings. I'm going to trade in my ST when I do switch, you're right it's not a replacement as a long distance tourer, but I only do 1 long trip each summer for about a week, so the VFR would likely be fine for that. The rest of the time it's just local riding on whatever twisty roads we can find. I figure that the VFR is a good compromise for my needs.

I'd say the 7th gen is perfect for 5 hour days. That's about what I do on mine. If I were to do a cross country ride, the would be the way to go. No so much for the comfort, but because of the fuel range. The VFR might get 180 miles to a tank on the highway, but if you like to get spirited with the throttle, it will suck the gas! 120 miles to a tank is not uncommon!

Thats good to know, that sort of range is fine with me, I'd rather stop more after than do hour after hour in the saddle.

The 2012 (I believe - might be a later year) has a SLIGHTLY bigger gas tank, but not much. Look into that if it makes a different but I believe it was less than .2 gallons...

I have done some mods to my 2010 VFR1200 DCT for comfort and performance. This bike is a rocket, with very strong brakes, and is comfortable now after a few mods. You won't be disappointed in a 2010. The mods I made were a personal choice and you may like the bike in stock form.

I bought a 2013 as the gas tanks of the 2012+ models have 1 gallon extra and that makes a difference.

Thanks, those bikes look great, but I'm in Canada. With the Canadian to US exchange right now it would cost me 40% above the listed price so it wouldn't make it worthwhile. If the dollar were at par, like two years ago, I would definitely consider a trip down.

Bills Cycle in Manitoba has a low km VFR1200. Looks to be in nice condition. It's listed on their website.

Any specific reason why you want an VFR 1200? I'm selling mine and I'll probably look at ST1300 or the Concours.

Hi "the dogs" welcome to the MadHouse.:welcome:

    :focus:

Hmm - not wanting rain on anyone's parade but I recall that Europe got a lot of the first production batch of 1200's and a few got tangled up in problems with engine swarf - indeed its was bad enough for H to check the bikes when presented for servicing - and in some cases replace the entire engine FOC!

A bike with that low miles and several owners makes me wonder if its a part of the problem child batch.

As for the 1200 vfrs they are fabulous bikes and certainly whatever the issue was, it was fixed in subsequent production years, and if you buy one it will deliver many years of riding pleasure.

Even if you don't speak a word of French you may still find this video will give you an insight into what these amazing bikes can really do :)

If you do end up with the vfr please remember to swing by the "introductions" forum and say hello to the rest of the folks on here and post up some photos of the bike.

    Take care

If you don't really need all that power-I would get a 2014 800- and the gas mileage would be way better

I do 400 mile per weekend for about and then 3-4 longer trips (2000+) each year. My 2013 VFR1200 has not let me down, it is a beast. You may want to consider the Russel AllDay seat and Helibars for more serious distances and budget permitting. Keep in mind Honda did a recall this January on all VFR1200 shaft drives, make sure this is done by the previous owner, or check to have this done, as if not, you may end up paying a good $1000 to have it done on your own ticket.
