I must admit i had to look up bucolic...

I got the 86 back on the ground finally, though it was spurred on by a broken washing machine that would not fit past the bikes in the garage. The new tires squeak but good rolling around the garage floor.

Rode the bike to the mechanic. The potential task list is a Daugherty suspension refresh, valve adjustment, starter valve synch, thermostat replacement, and Wideband 2 install. I will also take two left fairings which have some road rash to my coatings guy for touchup.

I was quoted 11.5 hours @90/hour on the valve adjustment. I am hoping he thought this is a VTEC, as that sounds higher than book. The bike has 18,000 miles. The oil was like primordial soup when I got it so I think the valve adjustment is due.

This mechanic has been taking care of my car but has worked on bikes, including VFRs. He is a massive car parts buyer but when I indicated I had knowledge of suppliers he tasked me with purchasing parts. That is a good challenge as I began learning more as soon as I had to look up valve cover gaskets. I will get the thermostat, water hoses, and perhaps the throttle body vacuum hose set. I will go back from the BMC air filter to the OEM after absorbing all of the discussion here on the topic.

I thought I should assemble a shim kit, perhaps with two of each shim? I know the risk is he will need a few others and I will have place an order while he is in the bike.

Other parts recommendations are appreciated. Since the suspension will have a long lead time I will have time to acquisition parts for anything that pops up. I plan on using hondapartshouse which is just one state to the left.

Be sure and pick up a big tube of KY Jelly at Walmart before starting.

FFS $1035?! For a valve check?! Grab them ankles, you're getting screwed. At 18,000 miles, I doubt any valves are out of spec.

What are you installing a wide band o2 sensor for?

No, this will be the out the door cost including adjustments. If they are all in spec, he will not bill adjustment labor. Although as meticulous as he is, I would figure him to center spec anything that is approaching critical. I don't know, I trust him, that's his job. I've got enough going getting woken up at 2 AM fixing my own systems to worry about the process.

Dynojet Wide Band 2 Unit, including a sensor, for feedback and the ability to tune the fuel myself. A dyno is particularly harsh, all dynos in the area have extremely bad comments, and my two mechanics that I implicitly trust do not do such work. This is a good compromise.

After reading a decade of the backlog of these forums it has become clear to me that when to adjust the valves, and the interval, or whether to even do it in a lifetime, is a religious argument. I have absolutely no interest in arguing religions online. I have studied the heck out of this argument and have concluded that everybody chooses when to do their valve adjustment and that's that.

I am surprised at you sometimes CR. You command evidence and critical analysis. "I doubt any valves are out of spec." is conjecture and beneath you. Usually you're a PhD. The bike will be apart, it is good time for that reason. It was previously neglected, it is good for that reason. The suspension has a long lead time, it is good for that reason, rather than tying the bike up just for the valves in a couple years from now.

I knew the valve adjustment would solicit such responses. It is stressful enough budgeting and making a determination for myself, after reading years of harsh posts on concisely opposite sides of the argument. After all of that, rehashing the valve adjustment argument just makes me want to pull an Elvis and shoot my monitor out.

What I could truly use from you guys that are hands on are suggestions for parts that it would be intelligent to replace, due to the efficiency of having these systems apart at this time, if you see anything that I missed.

okay okay sorry, I won't bother you about the valve adjustments.

While you have the bike apart, it is definitely worth changing the spark plugs with new oem ones, changing the fuel filter with a new oem one and sending your fuel injectors out to be ultra sonic cleaned and rebuilt by: https://precisionautoinjectors.com/

That way you can get a nice clean slate to begin tuning the pc5, instead of tuning around any possible variances in one injector or spark plug versus another.

Do not forget to block of the pair valves before you begin tuning. Mellodude makes some great block off plates.

On my 94 VFR at 2800km I found 3 of 4 of the front intake valves were out of spec, the other very close.
That is maybe 18000miles. Definitely worth checking.

Maybe see if Walmart has a sale on for two tubes of KY Jelly for the price of one. Maybe pick up a crescent wrench there too.

Not being one to argue religion, I am praying to St. Valvinus for guidance as to how many shims I need to get to heaven.

Try soaking the covers in medium hot water. Sometimes the color coating is applied to the clear plastic.. A little bleach could be added to the water too. Don't use hot solvents like lacquer thinner, acetone ect.

That's my fault. Since I dropped the bike at the mechanic, I have been doing the rain dance every day. And will continue to do so. So blame me, it's cool.

It ain't too bad around Olympia and South of there. North of there is a different story. Going into Seattle on the five is a nightmare.
