No, painted lines are fine ... right now it's all the gravel, sand and salt you have to watch.

They use a metric shit tonne of the stuff all winter long to help with traction and melt ice on the road.

I would think with all that, your bike would take a beating.....4×4 I think for me.....thats just to many obstacles and danger to be worried about.
I did UT for five years, that was 4 years to many, but didn't have a bike, only a ski boat.
    Take it slow mang.

It is harsh on any vehicle ... the potholes get monstrous this time of year with the melting and frost coming out of the ground.

My commute to the office is all 4-line highway and generally well maintained. Not a lot of gravel or sand on the road until I hit the city. Thankfully, my office is right on the outskirts, because there are sandboxes at the intersections right now until they get the street cleaners out.

Let me know how it goes. Also, let me know what your altitude and average speed is. I'm curious to see how much of a role altitude plays in the air/fuel ratio increasing or decreasing consumption.

Adding new forks (CBR F3 uppers w/Race Tech Gold valves, VTR1000 lowers, CBR 600RR calipers) and a Brembo radial master cylinder, with any luck should work out ok.

^ Sweet, like the white wheel, thats a nifty front fender too. Mines coming apart for fork work as well, while that's happening while the front wheel is off might as well finish up the paint job, and of coarse getting new rubber.

Bought 8 liters of API-SN 10 W 40 oil, Iridium spark plugs, an oil filter.

Bought a VFR 800 (gear driven valves) but haven't ridden it yet. Am too stupid to work on it myself...

Sounds like a sensible start. For your next purchase Chris, buy a torque wrench and look up the correct values for your plugs and drain plug. A filter wrench will also be handy.

Hi Chris and welcome to the Madhouse:welcome:

When you get time please visit the introductions part of the forum and say hi to the rest of the folks on here - and as has been pointed out its a good idea to add at least a photo of your new bike - or it won't be too long before folks will be raggin on you.. (Adding photos is easy - click the "insert image" icon and then follow the prompts to select and upload an image from your computer).

You might also want to update your forum profile (Forum Actions + Edit Profile) to include your VFR specs and an approximate location - city/country is fine - that way they will appear automatically alongside all your posts and if you need help you just might find someone nearby is willing to swing by and offer help - especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge:drink:!

    :focus:

It sounds like you have the basics for an interim service on a 5th gen there - but sounds like you will have enough oil for two services? I assume its some sort of semi-synthetic oil you purchased and that you have checked the service record to ensure the bike is not due a major service which is a whole lot more complex and probably not a good choice to start messing with your VFR!

Hint - I tend to purchase a spare sump plug and washer just in case I find the old one is chewed up. As for the service the basics are covered in this thread ...

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/4005-1998-VFR-800-Oil-Change-(5th-Generation)

Alternatively this youtube video will give you the basics - (but carefully watch the whole thing as some of the dismantling bits are mentioned out of sequence - and balancing the sump plug on the edge of the drain pan seems destined to see it fall in!).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPeq6YNHZmw

If you really have never done a motorbike service perhaps the biggest advice is make sure you have allowed yourself ample time and have a plenty of space in a warm, well lit garage. Whilst the oil is draining don't forget to do all the other inspection checks listed on the service schedule.

Good luck let us know how you get on.

Just an FYI as I think people who make recommendations like to hear about follow ups.

I sent an e-mail but they did not respond to that within a day. I know some still work primarily by phone thus I called and asked about the process for submission. Their first line of support did not understand what I was asking and I asked if they have a form to include with the hardware. She said no that people just submit their injectors for well-known vehicles and they also do a lot of local work that is dropped off. She wanted to the thorough and make sure that they currently have a fuel rail for handling these injectors. She was not able to tell that from her computer terminal so she offered to talk to the owner and promised to respond by the end of the day. I expect he will remember you or other VFR owners. Of course if he verifies that they can handle my VFR injectors then I will send them off.

Not knowing the number of injectors for my bike she warned me that the minimum is $80 (which is our cost at $20x4 anyway). I told her that cost isn not an issue as they are the #1 recommendation. She could have asked for a bit more LOL.

Wednesday evening I received a Wideband 2. I dropped it off at the mechanic. I also got a submittal form from Jamie, a beautiful PDF that can be filled out in Adobe Reader. I left that with the mechanic as well.

I picked up the front fairing and lower left fairing. I made an appointment with my automotive coatings guy on Monday. The lower fairing needs some scratches touched up and I have a new decal for it. The left turn signal has some of the plastic support ridge behind it broken off, so is is a little loose and rain would also go right behind it. Not that I will ever purposely ride in rain, that's just ridiculous. But you never know.

I rode my VFR to my local dealer as they had an open day with demo bikes to ride.Who wouldn't want to ride someone else's bike? I got to go for a 15 minute spin on a CRF1000 Africa Twin, this one was the DCT model. First impressions are that it is a really manageable size and well balanced. I found the DCT system pretty good although it sure does sound mechanical on downshifts, but great on upshifts under power. In D mode it seems to let the engine lug at around 2000 rpm, but was pretty responsive to my throttle hand, and after a few minutes I forgot about the gearbox and just let it do its thing. The bike was very comfortable and controllable although very different to push into bends compared to the VFR, but very stable. The in-line twin engine is a bit meh, not a patch on my well-used but much loved VTR1000, which felt like it would eat the CRF for breakfast for power and response, and feels much happier at 120 km/hr. The one bit I really did not like on the CRF was wind, specifically the turbulence off the screen made my helmet visor rattle at freeway speed.

So no sale today, and happy to get back onto my ancient VFR and cruise home.
