There's really no other way to describe this. I'm having intermittent grinding/clicking when decelerating. I hear it best ben I rev the engine to around 6k rpm with the clutch in. It is there during normal engine braking but gets lost in the riding noise. It seems to go away after I ride longer than 20-30 minutes. Like it warms up past this somehow. Any suggestions/concerns it is an impending mechanical failure?

I changed the oil and filter already. Nothing exciting about the quality of the old oil. I took a good look at it for shavings and such...

Also, related or not, I've developed a very mild "not on the ground but in the fairing" leak in the rubber seal on the shifter lever. Not enough to change the oil level and/or compromise my rear tire while riding.

I wonder if you might have a tight link or excessively worn chain. Just a thought. I had a knock in mine that turned out to be worn chain a couple years back.

This chain has only a few thousand miles on it, like <2k. This sound occurs when I'm sitting with the bike in neutral or with clutch pulled. Thank you for the idea, though!

Understood. Bit that doesn't mean you may not have had a faulty link. Just takes a few minutes on center stand to eliminate that as a cause. I think an over tight chain will also knock a bit. That's all I can offer. Hopefully a couple of the more technically knowledgable peeps will have a go at his for you.

Can you identify the area it comes from using a stethoscope or medical tubing?

    Clutch basket rattling?

Are you familiar with the sound of a cam chain tensioner going bad? There are posts here pointing to youtube videos of it. I don't think this is it from your description.

I can hear it coming from engine in general and sound like clicking during the off throttle decline of RPM when I'm in neutral/clutch in and not moving at all. Best I can hone in on it. It very well could be clutch basket stuff. Like it said, it's weird because it's intermittently there and always goes away when the bike is hot. Makes me think there's a spot on the clutch plate that is off a bit, but I'm a bit naive as to that being a plausible explanation.

There are some very experienced ears here, so if you can record the sound and post it to Youtube, that may help someone identify it.

Using a tube put to the ear, you can hone in on what specific area of the engine compartment the sound is coming from. The sound will be significantly louder as you point the tube right at it. The location can be a significant tip.

***UPDATE*** I have since done exquisite chain maintenance, but this clicking during deceleration is still haunting me. Here's what I know for sure:

    1) Sound is best heard during throttle off when sitting in neutral.
    2) Does not matter if clutch pulled or not (in neutral)
    3) Heard best on right/rear brake side around level of radiator (sounds right behind it)
    4) Is intermittent--> some rides I will hear it, some i will not, some only occaisionally
    5) Oil is new, level is the same as when changed, no discoloration
    6) Goes away after longer rides and bike is really hot.

Any help? Thanks in advance, you guys rock!
