My 99 is at around 60K (miles), I haven't checked them yet. I re-evaluate the idea every 10k or so.

I've been riding three VFR's and been around VFR people since 2005 and have yet to hear of anyone saying they had a valve out of adjustment bad enough to go to the trouble of the tear down or had runability problems Has anyone else?

I'm going to check the valves on my 98 this week. Its got 32000 miles and I have no clue if they've ever been checked.

Got the tank and air filter off thus far.

Sounds like I better find some valve cover gaskets. Why is this mandatory, aren't they the rubber reusable kind?

Even rubber compresses over time and may not spring back.

For what they cost, it's cheap insurance for not having to re-do them again if they start leaking.

FWIW, I just bought a 2001 with only 4146 miles on it. I've had it less than 2 weeks, and have put over 600 miles on it.

I've already replaced a stuck open thermostat. I'm never doing that again! I'm never doing valves, either!

It's going to get an nice gold DID X chain in a few days. Hopefully, that will be it for maintainence for a while.

I checked my valves at 29k miles. Seven intakes were tight. All of the exhausts are dead nuts. I see opinions on this board all the time that this doesn't need to be checked until you have symptoms. I respectfully disagree. The check isn't that bad, takes an afternoon. If you are in spec then no problem. If you are out of spec then swap out some shims. At least there is no cam chain to deal with on the 5th gen. :flex:
