Rectifier regulator issues

Does anyone out there have a solution to the rectifier regulator burning out problem. The plastic wiring harness was melted together along with some of the wiring sheathing. This always seems to happen at the absolute worst time. Any help would be appreciated.

pull out your stator and look at the wiring, if the insulation is cracked or it doesn't pass an ohm test. replace it. you can find a lot more info on this site in the electrical sec. the stator may still test good w/ the eng cold but after a long hot ride the insulation will break down and cause the r/r to fry.

After you've figured out what your problem is then check out the attach web short cut below.
It will show you step by step of how to add a cooling fan to your R/R.
This R/R fan MOD has been very successful for many VFR owners.

Hi! The prior owner didn't state anything about a "fan" mod for my newly purchased 2001 VFR800FI. However, there is a fan noise when I turn off the bike in hot weather. Did the fan come stock on the 2001's?

    Take care, and thanks again!

That sounds like the water cooling fan running.

Replaced r/r at 25,000 mi. on a 98. Installed (2) fans to cool r/r. r/r still ok at 65,000 mi, however , replaced stator 65,000. Anyone replaced stator at or below said mileage? Thanks. Thomas

I'm wanting to change out everything just to have piece of mind. Where's a good place to purchase a new "upgraded" R/R and also a Stador?

    Thanks!

I've found Western Honda in Scottsdale Ariz. to have good prices on o.e.m. parts (no shipping charges over $100 purchase). When you order R/R,the part will be upgaded from orig. It will be larger(more cooling fins). I recommend the fan installation also. Heat is the main factor for failure,in my opinion. Good luck. Thomas

    Yep...I agree also...
just pick-up a fan from a computer CPU...those things are made to run all day long.! ...
I drilled holes in the fins and then just zip tied it off.
I have not had a problem since...

I replaced my r/r and remounted it over the rear wheel for better cooling. CPU fans wont last long on this type of application from g forces. you may have to extend the wiring harness as i did, but then agian i dont use the stock harness from the r/r to thte bat. I made a new one. mount the r/r on some 1/4" standoffs over the rear wheel with the fins facing down. This allows for much better cooling as the stock position allows for almost none. I blew 3 r/r in 1000mi and after this mod its been going for 4000mi in hot southern weather. The r/r on just about every bike is the same wiring wise. They are 3phase. E-bay is an excellent place to find one (my last one was $25). The type of bike that the r/r is for dosent matter as long as the r/r has 3 yellow and 2 bat wires. Some r/r's will have and additional wire that is black and smaller gauge than the rest. This is a voltage-sense wire it goes to the neg batt-post along with the r/r negative. These are the best ones as they allow a perfectionist to add a variable resistor to adjust the max charge voltage. IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE HAS ANYMORE QUESTIONS E-MAIL ME. I CAN HELP YOU FIND A NEW R/R ON E-BAY AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIST YOU WITH THE CONNECTIONS.
