I would really appreciate a photo of an installed 12v socket on an 8th gen.

If I get out to the garage I will send you one of my "simply installed" one. I just connected it to the battery and ran in under the seat. I could not install mine on my stock clip-on bars, so I just leave the adapter that is waterproof "Maybe" just at the top or front of the seat. It has another extention that I take into my tank bag and have it as a USB charger which also has a weather proof protector or cap . The universal adapter at the front of the seat will take different items. I plan on using it for a battery tender in the winter. I used the one Anne marie suggested and I have no battery drain as of yet leaving it on the battery. Some have posted this problem and wired it to the headlight so it only works when the bike it on or starting up. I don't Fu.. with wiring due to some bad experiences.;-) Oh the one that anne marie and I have are cheaper than some. I got mine online for $29. I have seen them as high as $80 but have more of a OEM look if you want to do some body work on the front fairing or attach it to some aftermarket bar or bar risers that are round. Anne marie I am assuming has after market bars that she was able to attach hers too.

Thanks Bubba, I may follow your lead.

Nowadays everyone has something to charge while riding a sport touring motorcycle. Honda sure could have done better for their 12v socket.

Hey do you own thing, Honda does have a 12v Oem system for this bike, but I found it pretty pricey. For $30 bucks I found this a fit for me since I do not do much more than fair riding weather. I will go up to Canada next yr. And may have to rethink accessories. I need to see your Rockies before I die ;-) I hope to see anne marie and other Canadians on the way like VRF750 and Jeff Barret and yourself! Take care and ride hard!

Thanks for the pics. How do you use it ? do you have to keep whatever you are charging under the passenger seat or do you have access from outside ?

I've not actually used it as yet, but the location of it did surprise me, I expected it to be nearer the front of the bike !
Presuming I can feed the leads for sat nav etc under the seats similar to Bubba's pics above
Anyone else have it installed here ?

Yes, Bubba, I was able to attach mine to the bar. Not hard wired...leads run under tank and seat to attach to battery.
So far no battery drain and works fine. I rode in some rain and the two USB ports were bone dry under the cap.
No issues like I had with several previous Battery Tender charging leads.
I'm overall very satisfied with this quick solution to charging needs.

I have this. All wires hidden. Some complain that the ground wire is too short to route to the battery. I simply undid one bolt from the horn and bolted the supplied eyelet there and it grounds on the frame. Works great and no splicing required. I went to Revzilla and got a twin USB Powerlet plug and the top port charges at 1 amp the bottom 2.1. I can run navigation and whatever else and my phone is still charged. I also have RamMount bolted to the front tank bolts and an X-Grip to hold my phone. I had a short six inch USB cord and it all works great!

Powerlet stuff is all waterproof and it's always a tight precision fit, not loose like a lot of cigarette adapter type stuff, and they have a huge assortment of adapters.

please note, i just installed mine, and it is SWITCHED power, meaning it is not on unless the bike is on.

so you cant just leave your batteries in there charging while you stop in for fuel/food/pee which is a good and bad thing i guess

'' so you cant just leave your batteries in there charging while you stop in for fuel/food/pee which is a good and bad thing i guess''

From my point of view this makes the Honda socket of very limited use. I installed mine anyway since I already spent the 150$ the dealer charged me . 11.jpg

The waterproof, protected, directly connected to the battery Optimate usb socket installed at the handlebar area is 1/5 the price of the honda unit and is so much more useful. I wonder what was the reasons why Honda did it that way limiting its usefulness. 12.jpg

I want to do something similar - did you have to remove any bodywork to hide the wiring? I want to run my GPS cable from the battery to the handlebar area, and have the wiring hidden.
