    Yes, Greetings from brokebike mountain.
New member here, I'm sure some of you recognize my name from other places on the innerweb.
Not the best way to start, but thought I'd look for I dunno, another opinion, or a wider market for a project bike.
Spread the word to check that axle nut.

I have not decided what to do. Have had my '98 since I got it in early '99 with about 2,000 miles.
It has been a great friggin bike. Now it has 80,701. Month ago valve adjust and service.
Last Sunday ride I coasted to a stop near a KOA. Good thing, my mobile phone did not work there.
Sprocket and hub disappeared en route. This is seemingly not life ending for the bike.
Although I need to clean it off the black grunge and look closer at the font sprocket area.
It's cover, (hidden under the one you normally see) is broken badly. Well, both are broken.:witless:

    Ride safe.
    Lee

Yea, I've been reading up on your adventure on the dark side. Seems you have a bit of a perplexed hic up, where you able to figure out how far the damage went with the main case yet. the rear hub assembly should be fairly straight forward to repair or get. unless you have the money. Ebay here could be your friend.

Kinda thinking how I can degrease this mess w/o making a mini environmental disaster.
Or a mess on my concrete driveway. It's nasty.
Yard work and sprinkler repair today.
    Motorcycle tomorrow.

Brings back memories of the torque hammer. Long story.

    Sorry about your incident.

I don't have a torque hammer, just a couple wrenches that I know how to misuse.

Pulled off the chain guard and got a little better look. Pulled out another broken piece.
Gasket behind the broken cover was apparently green.
Need to figure out a way to get the sprocket off.
Sixth gear and stand on brake does not work, surprise. :witless:

Air impact time. First look with these photos has it looking promising, considering what happen.

It cooled down some and I've been trying to get the sprocket off w/o success.
Am not finding a way to prevent the sprocket turning.
Even if I get it off and see the engine case is fine, I don't really need or want a project bike.
Hmm. Sounds like a no brainer.

Time for a beer methinks. :boozer:

Accept that the chain is trash. So it matters not what you do to it.
    Same for the front sprocket.
Find a spot on the swingarm or rear hub area that you can use for leverage or to insert the screwdriver tip. Slip a screwdriver through a chain link, and wedge it so that it can't move. Get help from a friend (or Mr. Vicegrips) to make sure nothing slips. Use that impact if you need to. I see no reason why Honda would have used a reverse or left-hand thread here. Have not had it off of my 2000, but have taken the coutershaft sprocket off of many others. Should turn out with the normal counter-clockwise to loosen if adequate torque is applied.

I hesitate to suggest that you put some sort of pin through one of the holes in the sprocket itself to hold it in place against a feature on the case. That would be a last resort, basically don't do that.

Sounds like AA or one of those 12 step programs, LOL. :drunk:

Had this idea. Did not sound like a good one. Debating whether to get a pro to fix it with parts I source on fleabay etc, or sell as is.
Have not got the sprocket off.
Maybe sell extra bits first. I just wanna ride. :topsy_turvy:

Might be. I've been known to offer that kind of advice before.

    "extra bits"?

Curious, what led to the rear sprocket going AWOL in the first place?

Got me hanging. A couple theories.

1> Chain adjusted too tight, sprocket or hub fell apart.
2> Looks like your spindle bolt failed and came loose, or was not tightened properly during service. It holds the cush drive bell onto the rear drive assembly.

101_3369.jpg 101_3364.jpg Finally got the front sprocket off. A piece of steel cable from my stuff collection run through the chain and tied around the swingarm, and jamming a roofing tool on top the sprocket to keep the chain on worked. Now I need to do more cleaning and figure out how the inner cover comes off.

After that I moved on and got a battery and tire for my 03 Tuono so I can ride tomorrow.
    I just wanna ride.

That inner cover is cheap on e-bay. I just bought the inner and outer sprocket covers for 23 bucks.
