Don't know about the 8th gen but it is impossible to lock your keys in the side hard bags of 6th gen. You need the key to lock it. But you could loose the key and not have access to the inside. And you could loose the ignition key and be stuck somewhere. Or you could carry a spare set whenever you travel anywhere far form home base.

If local, I would just call for a friend or family member to get the spare key from my house (I have combo lock front door so they wouldn't need key to house to fetch it for me).
If traveling out of town I always take spare vehicle key with me and hide it somewhere in my stuff - nothing worse than losing your keys out of town. If traveling with the wife I make sure she has my spare key on her keychain just in case.

My old GMC Envoy loves to automatically lock the doors, whether the keys are in the ignition or not! I never get out of the car without them! BUT just in case, there is a spare ignition key in a magnetic key box on top of the frame! As for the bike, I would definitely take my spare key on any long trip.

That should be programmable from your steering wheel controls. I used to be able to do that with my 2003 Sierra but I think I lost that capability when I put a new radio and in turn, steering wheel wiring harness in my truck.

I have tried everything! Every now & then it resets the mirrors & seats! (Same key fob). What I found really scary was the default seat position upon exiting was all the way up towards the steering wheel, no amount of force could stop it. I tried to push back, and the motor won't stop.

My wife and I ride a lot together and I have the others key stored on each bike. So we always have two sets when together but on my ST1300 there is only one place where the key could get accidentally locked up and that is my left hand fairing storage box. On the VFR I always leave the key in the seat lock until the seat is back in place.

When I was responsible for a fleet of vehicles and one of my guys came in and told me this or that light came on I would ask them what it meant. They could not answer me. Then I would tell them my daughter could tell me by reading the manual. A wonderful book that is. If you still have your manual, it is all there. It might also answer your issue with the seat as well.

I used to travel with one set of keys inserted into the chamber of the hard bags. Never had an issue with them coming loose or falling out. A good friend of mine told me of loosing his on his VFR that way. I learned a new lesson and have never rode with them there since.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I was in the computer biz for years, I built servers and computers for small businesses, I went through every menu and setting.

My comment about the seats was about the lack of safety over rides. Your garage door will stop if something or someone gets in the way.

Note: Family bought this SUV new. So I have had 14 years of aggravation.

Now that I reflect back on my 03, and setting the enter and exit on the seats with the fob, it was a bit of a bitch getting that done. I am not sure just how much I can set any more on this truck. When the 6 CD changer burned out, I was not prepared to spend the $650 or so for a new one so I went after market with a single CD changer that also has a USB port. I don[t remember if I have ever used that CD player in it. I love that USB port. But to make this thing work, I also have to have the steering wheel wiring harness replaced so I lost the use of Onstar (expensive cell phone) and who knows what else.

I would like to get a new Sierra one tonne diesel but seems when you retire, the employer stops paying you your wages. The bastards.

An X of duct tape can firmly hold a spare key on the inside of one of your fairing pieces. Have the multi tool of your choice in a pocket or tank bag,or tape it tool free access.
