Looks like Ducati is going to produce something more along the lines of our beloved steeds. Talk abounds about accessories to make it even more of a sports touring type bike. The clipons are higher than your traditional Pani and the engine is the 939 from the Hypermotard.

I remember when the 1299 first was released, after a test ride I commented to the salesperson that if it could come with higher handlebars, it would be a perfect bike. While this is a smaller engine, it seems like Italy heard me!

But it's still a 2 cylinder, right? The Ducatis are certainly nice to look at but I don't really care for the sound of their 2 cylinder engines - I much prefer the music made by a 4 cylinder (whether it be an inline 4 or VFR). Plus they are way too high maintenance from what I hear - at least compared to Honda. But if you gave me one for free I wouldn't kick it out of my garage :)

    Regarding the engine; https://rideapart.com/articles/2016-ducati-hypermotard-939-sp-ride-review
I agree with the sound, as I LOVE the way my 99 sounds with the full header and TBR slipon. Some pipes sound better on the Ducs than others. I've heard a few different pipes on them and while I can't remember brands/sound, I do know there are some out there that do sound pretty dang nice.

I didn't know about their change in ownership. But the fact that they're now owned by Volkswagen doesn't exactly give me any additional confidence in their reliability - if anything it gives me less confidence based on my family's experience with VW - lol.

Well, actually it's Audi, which is obviously Volkswagen, but different engineers, etc. The good part is that they have enough cash now to do things right.

115 crank hp at 9000 on the super sport and 113 crank horsepower at 9000 on the hypermotard, it looks like the engine wasn't detuned at all in the transition, which is great.

I didn't see weight anywhere. This is kind of looking like the bike some of us wish Honda would build. Still maybe 10-15 HP shy of the dream, but I'll bet it comes in around 460 pounds.

Comfort....That seat looks way to thin to be comfortable for anything more than 20 minutes.

Reliability.....There's one to many youtube vids of Ducs going into limp mode for no apparent reason. Once in limp mode if you cycle the key the bike won't restart.

I think I'd rather have the girl next door over the Italian model...If you know what I mean.

Precisely - I'd rather have reliable down to earth Maryanne (Honda) over temperamental high maintenance Ginger (Ducati). Ginger was hotter but Maryanne made a killer banana cream pie - lol

Gotta love Internet gossip. I've had my 900SS/SP since I bought it new in 1995, can't say I've had any problems with it and this is from the old generation engines that had the "high maintenance" service intervals. Oddly, my Maryanne (09 VFR) almost left me stranded when she fried her stator and RR on me, meanwhile Ginger (in more ways than one) was there ready and willing to go!

As far as sound goes, two bikes I will always love the sound of, my 900SS and my VFR!

Maryanne must have just been punishing you for cheating on her with Ginger - lol

The new supersport is a pretty nice machine. I would put the sound and character of my Hypermotard 939SP with the Termignoni kit up against any VFR I've ever heard, especially with the crappy sounding exhausts they've come out with for the latest model VFR's. I've got the Ohlins suspension out for tuning right now, but I will have it on the dyno in the next couple of months at Factory Pro for it's first major tuning with an add on module. I'm interested to see what it puts out with the exhaust, Ducati performance airbox lid and ECU race key, BMC race filter, and an add on FI box with Marc Salvisberg doing the tuning.

I agree. Anybody who rides a POS stocker like that POS Duc is a POS.

Does one really want a bike that spiteful?! Good thing I tollerate certain behaviors.

BTW, the Duc never did anything like that, even after getting two new rides, 20+ years and she knows she's a keeper!
