My full proof removal tool, especially for 8 th gens with no room to work:

I have posted this before. I struggled when I first got the 8th gen on my first oil change. PO or dealer really over-tightened filter. 3 different wrenches kept slipping on hex flat spots, so I drilled holes in wrench, and used 1" self tapping screws which provided incredible grip. Used normal socket wrench with extension to undo filter with ease.

I remember seeing this somewhere, but couldn't remember. Thank you for posting this up again!

    Very helpful solution for anyone.

Allyance, I saw your original post, without the picture, and thought you must be crazy. Now it seems like a good idea. I need to find someone with a drill press it looks like.

OK, it took more time to take the photo than to make the tool along your model. Can't wait for my next oil change now! Thanks.

Don't over tighten and you won't need one of those. ;)

The one and only thing I will add.....Wrap the headers with aluminum foil before you pull and replace the filter.....it will save time on clean up, no mess at all.

Yeah, shouldn't need it after you DIY. But somebody really tighten mine before I bought it.

They come that way from the factory...the listed factory manual torque setting fpr a 6g was idiotic tight. Sometimes, if you get a rag that's the right thickess and tap the filter wrench on the fillter, with it underneath, you won't strip the top of the filter.

Don't know if you have worked on an 8th gen, but there just isn't any room there to get any kind of mechanical advantage!

Bought mine slightly used with 2600 miles, might have still have had factory oil & filter!

That's only if you have a California 8th gen with all that extra gubbins slung underneath!

Just hit 700 miles in mine so it's time for the 600 mile change. I had a quick look and it appears to me that if you have the correct size filter wrench and attach it to an 8" extension and socket wrench it should be no problem

The problem I found was on 3 different wrenchs, the fit was too sloppy and they did not lock around the flats well enough, they all slipped. You speak in theory, I speak from experience. You may get lucky if filter wasn't over tightened on assembly. I would try it normally first, but my solution is quick and clean if it slips.

True the CA version has the cannister, but I believe the down pipes are closer together due to the narrower design. Also the lower radiator doesn't swing out of the way very far. Makes it much harder than the 6th gens.

I used the Honda oil wrench that comes with the filter as a kit. It is made of stamped steel with the nut tack welded to the top. When I was removing the factory installed filter, there was no slippage because the fit is tight, but the top of the wrench warped because of the significant amount of torque I had to apply to start the filter turning. I was surprised that the nut did not shear off from the wrench.

    What color is your Norton?

Reason I ask is I had a metallic blue 850 for a short time in 74 while we were living in Toronto.

Unfortunately , As I recall reading that 75% of Japanese bikes sold to America come through California ports and have their specs so I think most of us in the U.S. get the "Junk in the Trunk" if true

The dealer did my first oil change and I've done every subsequent one since then so he dealt with the tight filter, if it was tight.

The next oil change.... I did it without having to remove the radiator bracket. It CAN be done by just finding that "just right" space to snake the filter out. I seem to be the only person that has ever done it. The next time I changed the oil and filter, I found it quicker and easier to just remove the bracket. FWIW.

Here's a photo of the socket wrench set up I used to get the factory filter off for my first oil change today. 1/2" wrench, adaptor for 3/8" x 3" extension, swivel adaptor, and filter wrench. Took a minute or two to twist hard while holding it firmly against the filter, but not too bad. Also, only removed the two lower fairings per the manual.

Problem is finding a wrench that doesn't slip on the filters flats. Some one here said Honda's didn't, 3 of mine did.

This only a problem if the filter has been over tighten previously.
