So, I got it buttoned up and took it out tonight.

In summary, this week I pulled my PAIR system, added a centerstand, cleaned and inspected everything on the bottom of the bike and the back of the bike, and installed a DMR rear shock. I also cleaned all of the electrical connections and inspected them to make sure there was no evidence of brittle or melty connection points, cleaned the air filter, and dropped in some plugs since the tank was off anyway.

It wouldn't start yesterday -- dammit! Turns out, I busted the mains fuse getting that damned holder off the battery box. Heh. Replaced it and had an FI light. A little diagnostic showed it was vacuum on the mass airflow pressure sensor, so I reran that line and everything was great. Probably pinched it or didn't have it on tight enough after pulling everything apart to get the PAIR out.

Anyway, it runs better with the PAIR blocks. It idles at 1050-1100 when before I pulled the system it was idling at 1250ish (spec is 1300 +/- 100rpm). And it's still smooth. Well, V4 smooth, at least. I thought it was just going to remove shit that gets in my way when I'm syncing throttle bodies or something, but maybe I was getting some blowback. Lord knows those valves were burnt, gummed up shit. Before the power commander it would backfire like mad on all deceleration, so there's no way they were working well.

So, I tossed all the leftover fasteners in the airbox for safe keeping, bolted the tank down, duct taped the plastic on and blasted around town a bit looking for bumps.

The rear shock is sublime. It is no taller than the old shock, which was also a modified 929 shock. Maybe a mm or two lower, in fact. But it is much different. I jump up and down on the pegs and it just... stops. I went over some bumpy roads that upset the old shock a little and the new one just rolled right over them. Never packed up, never felt twitchy. The front end feels better, the bike feels MORE stable -- which I attribute to the taller back end on the other shock -- but still turns in like I expect. And, even though it is a lot stiffer, the bumps don't beat me up. Again, I think the old shock was packing up. Nowhere near enough spring for my fatness and I just couldn't get the damping to balance.

If you just count the shock, it was about an hour's work. All the cleaning was a couple more, and that PAIR was a giant pain in the ass that included a hardware store run to get appropriate fasteners for the blockoff plates. The centerstand required pulling one of the downpipes ont the exhaust, but it went well and was still only a half hour or 40 mintutes. Can't say 100% the pair was worth the effort, but I am pretty sure it was. I CAN say I'm happy to have a centerstand, if only for servicing the bike. And I am 100% that the shock was worth the effort. Well, I haven't done major cornering, so 99 44/100% sure as I am almost positive from my short test ride that it's everything I hoped.

I ordered a new chain and sprocket kit today. My chain is WASTED!!! It is like two different chains. Half of it sags way down, the other half is tight as hell. There is about an inch difference between the two sections. To get the loose section tight, it makes the tight section so tight, it makes it hard to turn the wheel. To make the tight section with the correct sag, it makes the loose section hang way low. Almost as bad as AM's chain on her way home from my place.

Geez, Lint. That's nuts. I've never seen that much difference except on an old chain with a bound up link.

At least you know you got every damned mile possible out of it, though.

Hey Lint, that bike is seriously compressed, if you still have the standard suspension it would explain you hitting your boot sliders.

Not much. I am hoping that tomorrow,Wal*Mart will have some of that new burger flavored toothpaste in stock. Other than that since my bike is so heavy I am thinking on get a pair of these and dumping the centerstand all together for a net decrease in sprung weight and an increase in stability.

One might think I would wait until manana to post this mechanical marvel but it's the real thing..

Yes, I agree, completely. I'm saving for a DMR suspension.

Yeah, true. The P.O. only put on a new chain, not new sprockets. This chain only lasted about 7k miles. It may have been some ultra cheap eBay chain tho.

Wow, if I did not see that with my own eyes, I would not believe it.

Over-hauled the water pump on my EX500, no leaks and holds vacuum. :mech: got some brake pads coming for my 91.

Just ran some errands... it's a different bike with Jaime's shock. I'm excited for the weekend.

That said, it's already way more bike than I am rider. You do your best to stay safe and have fun with what you've got. But if you weigh more than 150lbs I bet it makes a lot of difference for you.

I've ridden a lot of high end bikes, about five different Ducatis, two different BMWs, different Suzukis and three Yamahas, in addition to the bikes I've owned. I completely understand what a difference a great suspension makes!

I'm looking forward to getting my bike properly suspended!

    Painting Project

I finally finished my paint job on my 04' VFR!!! This has literally taken months of saving for the right primer, right paint, and right clear coat, not to mention the spray gun and other materials as well as a chrome windscreen which apparently came on the slow boat from China.

It used to look like this. I bought it even though I HATED the lime green color
    IMG_4186.JPG IMG_4187.JPG IMG_4188.JPG

After tons of sanding...more sanding, application of primer....more sanding...application of base coat....more sanding......2nd coat of the base coat....yep....more sanding......another base coat application.....by this time I gave up sanding (i.e. ran out of funds for sandpaper because wife was screaming at me over how much I've spent)....application of red metal flake in the first clear coat....several clear coats later, the project finally turned out like this. I just wish the pictures showed the red metal flake better. It looks much better in person.

    IMG_4391.JPG IMG_4399.JPG IMG_4400.JPG IMG_4403.JPG IMG_4410.JPG

Now I just need to get a new left radiator since the one I had is leaking....ARRRRGGGGHHH I can't ride it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I haven't put the exhaust back on yet. They guy I bought it from put a redneck engineered exhaust with the tail pipe and two truck tips. As a result it sounds like it's just a straight pipe.

Agreed. Also great for dudes who have bikes that weigh close to half a ton or even a few dudes here who run out and buy 3 or 4 Titanium bolts to save weight..

Since it was nice out, that and 60, Yippie! After mowing the lawn it was still nice, Grabbed the Vifer before it got dark out, we went one more time before the big tear down. Only thing, out on one of the better twisty back roads, came around the corner to this wet spot, figure best to turn around as I know there's more of that to come. all and all it was a good outing. Man does this Viffer like to run, and to think it's going to get better :)

On a side Question. Anyone here dare to test how far one can go once the last bar starts flashing on a 5th gen ? I made it home flashing for the better part of 22 miles. A tap on the tank says it's pretty empty, which is another reason I went out, I wanted to get as much fuel outa the tank prior to taking it off.

Thanks for the great photos RVFR, what are you planning to do to your motorcycle?

Hey here's a few obstacles I came upon this morning, I wanted to ride a motorcycle today but I knew the roads would be a problem with the flooding everywhere. Out and about in 4WD.
