I removed and washed with a weak jet of water and blown with compressed air. then soaked in diesel fuel (to remove tar), closing all openings. after again washed with water and blown air. as it turns out from the factory. recently tried LIQUI MOLY-Kuhler Aussenreiniger, very good vehicle and it is not. Thank you for all the replies. I used Gunk on it. Brushed it well in with a paint brush and let it stand for a while. Then I scrubbed it harder with a slightly harder brush. The problem is finding a brush that will actually get a decent distance into the matrix. It looks a lot cleaner now but I don't think that it's had much effect on my low speed overheating problem. I quite like the dishwasher idea. I might give that a go too.
