I have a Cargo Endurance magnetic tank bag. It works fine. However I would prefer not to have the magnetic wings, rather just the magnets in the bottom of the bag which are plenty for holding the bag in place. I've done some searching and called a couple suppliers and haven't found anything. There probably aren't any such designs, but thought I would ask here. Anyone ever seen a magnetic tank bag without the side wings?

I've not seen any without wings. If you keep it clean there shouldn't be an issue. Seems like kind of a trade-off: fewer magnets=more likely to slide.

Thank You for the reply FJ1200rydertoo. There is no issue, it's just more of an aesthetic thing. The few magnets in the bottom of the Cargo Endurance are plenty for keeping the bag in place for my use. I just don't care for the wings! I suppose I may go back to a Tour Master strap on like I have had in the past and worked OK, and use the Endurance for a tail bag occasionally. Thanks again for your reply.

I agree with you on the esthetics of the wings. I don't care for them either.

Having ridden with RKA magnetic tankbags for a dozen years, I can guarantee you problems if you remove the wings. They are critical for holding the bag on during the large sideloads experienced at speed. There are very good reasons every magnetic tankbag ever made has them.

Thank You ksoholm for the reply. Being often a skeptic, I thought this as well. But not so with the Cargo Endurance bag, at least not for me. I taped and strapped the wings up as a test, for several rides, before considering buying a bag without wings or modifying the bag I have. It stayed put, so when I made that statement in previous post it was from my experience. I have also used several strap on tank bags through the years and although they might wiggle around a bit, I've never had any that were stressed from side loads. Obviously your mileage differs.

Yeah, it would seem to be OK, but, a friend and I both experienced our magnetic tankbags being blown off in a sharp, sudden cross wind in CA; as we were on a road trip, we thought it wise to use the safety straps around the steering heads, which saved the day. From an engineering perspective, with wings you're probably safe in the 95th percentile of situations; without, maybe 75-80th. My calculation would be to keep wings and lessen chance of bag being blown off onto freeway and run over by 8 cars...

I have an oldish magnetic Chase Harper tank bag that has no wings.
It is roughly 12" x 10" x 5", with clear map pocket on top. I don't see any model name or # on it.
It has a connector for a safety strap. I rarely used it and last time I did, the strap got lost.
It will move around a bit from wind, and once in a while I had to corral it with my elbows.
Because I was not using the strap.
It has not seem much use since I got a Givi rack and JC Whitney top case.

Appears they have a couple that might suit you. I had to look.

Thank You VFR4Lee for the information and link on the Chase Harper tank bags, I will check them out. I have only had two tank bags, The magnetic Cargo Endurance and a Tour Master strap on. It may be I have been spoiled by the strong magnets in the Cargo bag compared to other magnetic bags.

Hope it helps. I was about to go look for it in the garage, and realized it was in the closet, right here in my office / cave.

The last thing I'm looking at while riding with my magnetic tank bag is the wings magnets.

Wow....that is a statement of revelation!

Glad to hear mofo you are not looking down at your wing magnets while riding. What a useless reply......on the other hand, maybe you are just kidding!

Aboot the first time the OP loses that tankbag with the taped up "wings" that had his cell phone, camera a clean pair of skivvies and some Jo-jos innit, he will know why God made angels and tankbags with wings.

Have you ever considered those that lock on the tank instead ? You'll need the right bracket on the tank (permanent), but doesn't have the flapping wings :)

    example :

Thank You for the suggestion seacliff, I have considered those types. However, I was thinking to spend about half that amount, but hesitate more due to I've never seen one! I live out in the sticks and the few bike shops/dealers in this area do not have any samples. They look slick online and are probably worth the price. I have two bikes that I would like to flip-flop the tank bag on so I would need to get two tank mounts, but again, it may well be worth the cost. I keep on looking to hopefully find a rider locally that is using one.

Living in the sticks has it's advantages. I hate crowded aisles at Wal*Mart and Dollar Stores. Back when I was poor and needed a tank bag for the one bike I had, I got a big purse at a garage sale. (actually a barn sale) and superglued it to my tank. I bet one of those black and yellow plastic toolboxes would work too. I've seen a couple of these on Harleys.

Yep, I was kidding, and since I had nothing positive to add, I decided to make a useless post.

Givi tanklock every time. On and off in seconds and does not make contact with the tank.

Different sizes are available, as are different materials.
