Sad but true, we spent the week in NY. at Ameracade and on friday when leaving the expo my bike wouldnt stay running, when it finaly did run, using the blinker would kill the motor, switching to high beem would kill the motor (even though all lights were out) and it wouldnt turn up above 4-6 grand. I was able to limp the battered unit back to our campsite 24 miles away only to have it give up 300 feet from the camper!! :yield: The FI light kept coming on, and it would periodicaly die out during the SLOW commute back to the site, all with no lights. we checked all fuses, they were fine, we looked for any bad looking connections ect, but found nothing. It is still under warranty, it was bought in oct. as a left over, its currently at the honda shop. Curiosity is killing me!!! I cant wait to find out whats wrong, could it be blinker fluid is low?

Wow, if it is the R/R, is it that fragile or prone to failure? We're talking about an almost new bike. I thought Honda would have sorted it out by '05. Makes me want to carry a spare on a long trip, along with the flat repair kit and chain lube...

Does the 07 have the same R/R and is it as prone to failure?

yes and no. 6th gen r/r's are the best of the breed and the fail rate is no where near the older years.

It does sound electrical in nature but he gave us very little info on the bike itself, just the symptoms. Could be a bad/poorly charged battery or wiring.

Going by the pics of the 5th gen, it's slightly larger with more finning on the backside but by far the biggest difference is the mounting location. The 6th gen puts it up front on the main frame.

Did you check for fried connectors under the seat?

I had a problem like this, although a little more random. I traced it back to burned connector between the + on the R/R and the battery. It is the one under the seat with the 30 amp fuse in line.

Understanding that wiring doesn't fry for no reason, I changed the battery and R/R as well. While I was at it, I tested the stator. While it past the output voltage test, it failed the resistance between phases test. I replaced that too. The old one looked "toasty."

5000 miles later, problem solved. Only wish it didn't cost so damned much to change all that crap.

The bike has 4500 miles on it, is bone stock, and was ridden to the site of the problem, we looked for signs of bad connections, ect. Not being familiar with r/r problems I wouldnt know where to start. I took it to the honda shop on saturday, i just called for an update (wednesday 1200pm) and they may not be able to get to it this week!! I said "cmon, do you really have that many back-logged hondas to work on"!! i tried to make light of the situation but the reality is it SUCKS!!!:frown:

I picked up by beloved fri night and was amazed at what i was told the problem was! The shop manager told me that the left side switch gear had gone bad and that it was dragging down the ECU by causing a voltage drop but wasnt enough to blow the fuse, sounds funny, but when i speak to the tech im sure ill get the real story! anyhooo it has a new switch assembly and runs fine, thanks for all your silent prayers!!!

New VFR Recall for Electical Issues on 2002-2005 Models

Not sure if this issue will affect the original poster. I received a notice from Honda last Friday that there is a recall on 2002-2005 VFRs. There is a problem with the connection between the main harness and a sub-harness which might cause the connector to melt and fail.

They haven't developed a fix yet. The notice said I'm suppose to park the bike (not happening), or minimize use of the high beams and other electrical accessory until the fix is available. I've already replaced one sub-harness on the bike because of a melted connector. The recall notice was vague and I could not tell if this was the defective one or not.

I'll post another message once I get the notice to take the bike to the dealership.
