Pilot Power fronts combined with Pilot Road rears are also a known combo, since they wear around the same time (6k-8k)

Believe it or not, I used this combo (PP3 front, PR4 rear) and got 21k out of them! Previous set was Metzeler M7s which went about 8k before I was showing steel on the rear. The Michelins were toast by the time I swapped them but they did the job up until then.

OE ones were t30s from the factory. Generally Oe Tyres are crap and don't last long.

The T30 has been superseded by T30 Evo

Shit, sorry for you loss! seriously. I feel really crappy about it now happening once in 34yrs. A Moment of silence for the "little baby tire early departure" If only it knew the roads it was meant to see.

On my 8th gen. I've used the junk OEM's....what a pitiful excuse for a tire. I went from them to BT023's which handled exponentially better (anything would over the OEM's) but ride hard as a Sherman tank would I think. The BTo23 is a great value but just ride too hard as do all Stones. They wore very well for me. Now, I'm on a new set of Pirelli Angel GT's with rotator cuff surgery healing so no riding for a few more weeks. The little riding I did do with the Angels indicated they don't ride near as hard as any Bridgestone which were just beating me up even with suspension adjustments. I don't think they will ever handle as well as I want them to because they're a ST tire. I've concluded that ST tires just don't handle like I want to ride and do ride. Mileage is getting to be secondary over handling which is one aspect of safety. I like the old PR2's but handling is still a bit slow and wear is a bit fast. They're an easy tire to lean over edge to edge and make full use of the rubber and grip which isn't bad. FWIW.

I finally dumped my Dunlop 222's. Yuk they were terrible and put on the 190/55-17 Battleaxe's I took of my S1000RR. I also had the suspension set properly and wow the bike woke up nicely! The 190's just barely fit but they are very nice in comparison!

What sort of mileage have you got out if the D222s? I'll be keeping mine until they're properly worn.
Have to say, they're not as bad as I feared based on bikes with OE D204s and D207s which were like riding on ice in the wet. These haven't let go yet and I've done over 1000 miles in the dry and wet

I ride me 8g monstly in the Alps and still have the original Dunlop 222 on the bike. I am a big fan of the Bridgestone BT20/21 tires and did not expect much from the OEM Dunlops. I have to admit that I am quite impressed how the Dunlops behaved during some, say, spirited riding. So, as far as I can judge, they are good tires with enough grip in dry conditions and seem to fit the VFR well. Can't say much about riding them in the rain, though. I will probably switch to BT21s when the Dunlops are done, just to see what they can do for the bike. Can't chime in with the Dunlop bashing choir, though.

You may have problems getting BT20 or 21 any more, they've been superseded by BT23 and T30EVO, both of which will do an excellent job on the 8th gen.

If your a fan of 020 and 021 I would upgrade to the T30 evo , far superior tyre . Have run them all at some point on my bikes over the years, did track days with bt023 on my Cbr no problems.

I'm kind of late to this party, but I'd like to add my experiences between the PR4 and the T30EVO tires.

If you want a set of tires for high mileage touring, where you're not going to be pushing the bike hard, especially while leaned over far, then the PR4 is for you. Otherwise, you better have damned fine control of your throttle and make absolutely certain you are feeding the power into the back tire gently. I've had the PR4 rear slide around and nearly highside quite a few times. They simply don't have the grip front or rear that they need for sport riding.

If you're willing to sacrifice a little bit of mileage for near hyper sport tire traction, get the T30 EVO. They outperform the Michelin in every way except perhaps mileage. I've ridden them through standing water in PCH and I've had them leaned over all the way to the edge of the tread. I've hit the brakes hard enough to lift the rear tire off of the ground about a foot with zero drama whatsoever. They track with whatever you ask of the bike. I've drug hard parts, boot sliders and knee pucks and the T30 EVO front has been as reliable as a wristwatch. I've had the rear actually worn past the very edge of the tread and it had only slightly slipped on a cold foggy morning on a cold road with a ton of throttle input all at once.

Jeff Barrett had used the GT EVOs and he said he got much more life out of them compared to the standard Evo. I know that the tread compound is the same, but the construction of the tire is different, to hold increased weight.

FWIW, I only have experience with these two sport touring tires, although I have run the PR3s, but I never really pushed them hard really leaned over. I have turned the back tire blue a few times with the 3s and they did well, but it's been a while, so I can't compare them to the way I ride now.

My next set of tires will probably be something along the lines of Q3+ or another track day/day to day tire, just so I can have more confidence/grip at high lean angle.

Both of the pictures above were done with the T30EVO front/PR4 rear (I took a long trip in July and I bought the 4 rear for mileage), but I've had to be very careful with the back tire breaking free mid turn. If I still had the Bridgestone back there, I'd be much more comfortable and not have to be so super cautious with the throttle. I feel that the 4 overheats and gets greasy and it happens pretty quick.

I run the same combo but have not gotten the 21k miles, just shy of 14k was the most miles I've done with them. Great combo IMO.

Yeah awesome combo for sure. I think the midwest roads and me riding conservatively helped get that longevity. Just put on a fresh set so hoping for a repeat performance.
