I don't think the VFR is a long distance bike

Goldwings around here are for Harley lookin dudes that are too cool to wave back. When I see one, I feel like I'm going through a worm hole and ending up in the Twilight Zone.

The most I have done is 538 miles in one day and honestly the bike was very comfortable at the end of the day, I was just ready to be done, eat and drink some beer...

Just did 300 miles Sunday (in less than 7 hours) with part of them two up. Not exactly setting land speed records but not sitting still either and was more than glad I was not perched on the Triumph!

the cheap JC Whitney ones are just pegs, but if you spend the money you actually get a second set of controls for those front pegs, for exactly the reason mentioned - safety via response time in an emergency

the most I have ever done in one day is a little over 1200 miles on my K1200RS

quite a few 1k+ miles on a few different bikes

I think the longest I have done on a VFR was 8-900 on my old '98. Haven't done anything close to that on my 2004, I just don't ride as much anymore and don't take long mc trips anymore.

A typical Saturday ride for me is about 250 miles and the longest I've done in a single day is @ 550 miles. Anything over 300 miles in a day does make me sore but it's nothing a couple of bong hits can't fix

Flash back to when I was a punk and letting cute girls ride my Schwinn Stingray and having my buddies begging trying to smell the seat... Dont traumatize me please, I have fond child-hood memories. And I dont have a center stand on dah Viffer but have a secure Handy Lift, could substitute for a love Match-INE

Longest haul I ever done was 900 kay (560 ml) & 2 days later made the home trip (straight runs, stopped only for petrol, ciggies & pee breaks). By the time I got half way on the homeward leg my wrists where screaming, thought my spine was going to pop out from the back of my neck & I didn't have a sore backside, as I'd lost any sensation from my waist down.
I haven't really done any long hauls on VFR, but did quite a few on my last bike & to be honest the ergonomics are very similar (CBR600 F3). My observation would be, that long rides involving back roads & canyons, then I can't imagine the VFR being at all uncomfortable. Your minds involved more in riding, your moving all over the place, changing gears & braking. Long hauls on the highway apart from being boring, puts your body in static position & then your wrists, arms, back, neck & bum suffer as a result.

I'm 6'3" and weigh 230# 46yrs. I find the bike comfortable for the long haul. The bike is stock except exhaust. If you use your knees and squeeze the tank to support your weight instead of your wrists, it make things alot nicer. I've done 600-700 miles back to back with no problem.

Mine's a '98 with Helibars, lowered pegs, and a Sargent seat. I've ridden 8 to 16 hour days, and it was quite bearable. I just added a BMW K1200LT land yacht to the stable. Honestly, my VFR is more comfortable to ride, and I prefer it over the LT for comfort.

I've done a few 1100 mile days on my 94 VFR750 (corbin seat, OEM bars & risers, Throttlemeister), only standing over it to get gas, and never had a problem with it. I kinda enjoy long days, no matter the bike really.

7 years ago at age 65 I did a 1050 mile, 15 hour, Iron Butt day on my 99 Yellow VFR I leave in Arizona. Last April (2017) I did a 5000 mile loop in 10 days. Heli Bars and a Corbin. At 72 years now, def not gonna do the Iron Butt again. The 2003 Silver VFR in the Picture is the one I use here on the Big Island, Hawaii. THE VIFFER IS OBVIOUSLY A LONG DISTANCE BIKE, BUT NOT FOR PUSSIES !!!!! LOL Renzo in Kau.

I'm 55 and have done 1100km days on my 5G, but it hurts.
Not long ago, I was riding my favourite twisty road and caught up to two bikes that were loaded up with gear, one was a Sprint SE, the other was a CBR600F4i.
They were holding me up a bit. so I closed the gap and put myself in a position to overtake.
By this stage, the road tightens up and gets into a rythm, they picked up the pace and I just kept up with them enjoying the ride.
I was having a ball as they had a really fast easy flowing style with high entry speed and very little braking.
When we got to a well known cafe where I normally pull up for a break and something to eat, I was blown away by the two riders.
One needed help getting off the bike (Sprint SE) the other coudn't hear anything until he put on his hearing aid.
They have aparently been riding together for over 50 years, and were both over 75.
I nearly had a tear in my eye, I hope that I can do the same at that age.
    Hats off to them boys.

Anyone ever heard of a "car"? Some of the mileage quoted gets hard to take in any kind of car. It totally depends on the kind of miles. Try a 500 mile day in the Smoky's and you'll wake up dead. In straight line, I would die of boredom.

This thread dates from 2011, but has some recent additions.....

Respecting we are each individual, many of the high milers seem like freaks to me. I'll believe it if you are one of those skinny, wiry strong, distance runners. Or, you have "grandpa strength" ha,ha :Flypig: Iron Butt COMPETITION is fundamentally asinine. Like eating 50 clams in 15 seconds eating competition? What is the point? My '96 has electric hookup, throttlemeister, gps, GIVI bags. Ride in a Roadcrafter. 400 mi is a long day for me. Last 2k trip for me- bottoms of feet were aching too soon each day, and shoulders would stiffen up. Motel at night was just triage. No fun.
How about mentally, though? My biggest problem is concentration. After 350, I'm singing songs to myself, reciting movie lines, trying to remember names from middle school.... I'm in no condition to ride. My lane discipline is shit. SIPDE is shit. Start taking chances on overtake, just to get the blood pumping, bad decisions on exits and gas fill-ups, screaming frustration with RVs... Safety is compromised. Good point earlier about a car. You start living in a 75 mph bubble, and driving like a zombie.

Best item I ever bought was a beaded seat. Cools and stimulates blood flow. Sheepskins are a con. Had a gel seat, too. Never noticed any difference. It blew off a while ago, while I was standing on my pegs, and I didn't turn around to get it.

Second best item I ever bought was a '94 GL1500 for 3800 bucks. :Yo:(less than a year) Obv. you are in seated position so tailbone is pressed, but it is a comfy mf-er. Wind and wind noise are gone, stock seat is a throne. Fill up is at 125-150 mi, and I usually go 80 before I even look, and can finish 125 mi jolts without any discomfort. It still adds up. At 400 mi, I'm bored and my mind is wandering. Evening after ride is big improvement. VFR is still my fav and fun each day, commute or day trip. Love it, and will sell the Wing when need arises. VFR stays with me until the wheels come off.:Rip:

tl:dr Get a Gold Wing as your second bike!
