It's my turn for a stator and regulator/rectifier change.

Yeah, although I brain farted with the connector, there's enough post about the RR for it to be ingrained into memory by now!

Good luck bro. Just get a roadstercycle kit and new OEM stator to make it go as smoothly as possible.

D, don't know if this will be of any help since you are the mechanic here and I'm not, but the wires on the OEM stator I bought were too short and I needed to add more. I guess the wires come all in standard length, but I don't know the 01 model, and not sure if you plan on relocating it.

Wow when it rains it pours. That time of season. Stator + r/r and or battery check. Went for a ride yesterday, Ortega loop, gas stop at San Clemente. Turned key hit starter button and bike struggled to start, clock had reset. Putting on electrician suit today. Nah just going to replace it all, easy fix. Pics later, when the suit comes on.

A few years ago charging failures were pretty much an every day issue here but for quite some time now they have become few and far between. I would like to think that members of VFR World came up with the fixes that seem to have reduced the problems these bikes were suffering from. Manufacturers and service departments will only replace like with like, so sooner or later the failure will happen again

After it failed in '08 I upgraded the Gen 5 Mk1s original R/R the SH579A-11 to a much larger finned Hondas updated R/R SH689DA. Another tip is if you have lead battery ie Yuasa and haven't ridden in a while then occasionally trickle charging your battery or before a ride say with a motorcycle rated charger eg the Ctek MXS 0.8 will find cold starting easier and the battery and R/R may last longer.

So I swapped out the Stator and RR this past Saturday. I mentioned in another post that the connector looked like a torch was taken to it. By torch, I mean a flame throwing type! As you can see I had to cut out both connectors off of their respective components, as the connectors were melted together.

Holy Meltdown, OOTV!! I've never seen one that warped. Wiring harnesses for headlamps in my ole Trailblazer used to meltdown constantly (guess a common problem with those trucks as is these parts with VFR)...but never as insane. Glad you weren't seriously burned up. Brings flashbacks of when my car as a teen started on fire under the steering column as I was driving it down the road. :/

Riprocop, did you get yours taken care of?

I hear that! Could have been a lot worse, well electrically, the low side was actually a blessing in disguise. Had I not gone down I could have been a lot further from home and or in a place not easily reachable by AAA. New one is now in as well as the new RR. This one has soldered connections though.

Just bought the Roadstercycle R/R and OEM stator. The bikes been starting to show all the signs of it going out; burning plastic smell, blanking out the instrument panel on start up... Its only a matter of time. When the parts arrive, it gets replaced. Time to dig out the soldering iron.
