If anyone with a 5th gen wants ever wants to prove how useful their extra 2 valves are at lower rpms and is in the central florida area, I would be more than happy to pay for their dyno run to end this dispute.

You don't need all the things to operate a vtec on any bike to make it run great. Can you get better gas mileage and a wee bit more torque down in low rpms on the VFR? Sure But out of this list how many do that?

    V-fours[edit]
I don't think any of these inline 4's do and they don't seem to have a problem.

This was just a quick stupid Google search but you know the jist of it. I want all my valves working all the time with as pretty of a linear dyno curve as I can get. This debate will never end, I live with the vtec but wish it was not there. Still love the big ole girl.

Simple fact is VTEC is what is on the bike. Like it or don't, but it's there.

The 04 I had was fairly abrupt in transition, and I did not care for that. A PC III smoothed that out and made it a non-issue.

On the 15 I have now, not an issue. I've got an Arrow slip on but waiting till my next oil change to install the PC V.

The pros and cons of VTEC can be debated till the cows come home. Won't change anything.

Does anyone know of any 6th or 8th gens that have had VTEC locked to 4 valve operation? It's got to be possible to do, either mechanically or electronically.

Once again: Explain the existence of the Honda CB400SF Hyper VTEC Revo

Why does Honda make this model? Why has it been in production with VTEC since 1999? Is it because down at the 400cc level it makes a better, more enjoyable engine?

All the know is all these people who complain about the initial “hit” of V-tec should try a newer style 450 MX bike. Then they will really know what power surge feels like.

When I initially bought my 03 I was concerned about how abrupt the the power was going to come on, that quickly faded as it was nothing to be worried about at all.

Compared to my YZ450f its a pussy cat.

I know the debate will never end but if any of you ever get the chance I suggest you take it to really feel the difference.

Its not that the "surge" scares me or is abrupt,.. the surge shows me what im lacking on my '06 needlessly,.. i feel no added torque from the 2v operation,.. just doggy until 7,000 rpm

I grew up with 2 stroke dirt and street bikes. RM 250’s, YZ 250’s, CR 250 (just sold my last cr last month) , many RD 350 with all sorts of expansion chambers, the totally insane Kwai 750H2 and many more. You get use to the “hit on the Pipe”. Still would be nice to not have a hit on any bike. Broad smooth linear power delivery.

Whats to explain? They make a small cc naked vtec bike. Your point is? Probably a fun little bike but at 460 lbs ands only 55 hp there are other much lighter bikes I would choose first.

Just skimming over that list really quick, most of those bikes would not stand a snow balls chance in hell passing current Euro, CARB, EPA emissions standards. Which is why the 2002 passing CARB standards about 10 years ahead of schedule was such a big deal...

Yeah that is cool, ahead of the times. I'm always trying to have a small environmental footprint, recycle, avoid using plastics as much as possible, ect but on motor bikes I'm a hypocrite. Most of my bikes through the years would not pass the sniff test. But other than decibels my VFR would. Still has the cat. To bad Apex no longer make can for the VFR, I love mine. And we won't talk about the 2 stroke vintage smokers pollution factor. lol I keep hearing rumors of one of the big boys putting out a direct injection 2 stroke that will meet EPA but nothing yet. It would be cool to have the power, low emission and wide power band of a 2 stroke. A sub 300 lb cafe racer in the 500cc range....... No hit on the pipe!

Yeah I know, I know, none of us really care about Emissions regulations. My 2007 hasn't had it's Cat, Charcoal Canister, Pair valves or 02 sensors since 2009 and in 2015 I took it even further and removed the Deceleration fuel cut. I realize our bikes work a lot better without most of the emissions equipment, especially the lean fuel mapping and conservative ignition mapping, which I also sorted out. I am just saying Honda had its reasons for doing these things (some reasons are less important to me than others). They basically took an engine that's architecture dates back to a 1994 Race bike (RC45), detuned it a bit, added emissions equipment/VTEC, updated the ECU/ mapping and were able to make it pass very strict emissions standards. I can guarantee that VTEC pays a huge role in how easily the 8th gen passed the EURO 4 regulations, that so many others had issues passing. The reason I don't mind VTEC, despite the constant bashing on these forums, is because it works great with modified fuel mapping and actually performs better than traditional 4 valve, when both fuel and ignition mapping are sorted out.

Spot on, ride the Dragon alot and after 15 years on this bike it’s getting the feel of the machine, the transition is smooth if acceleration is smoothly approached and I’m usually past the apex, it’s a whale compared to the cbr600 I rode thru there but the vfr still handles firm and is so much smoother. Plus I like the kick when punched thru

Just my opinion but linked brakes and VTEC should be on a cruiser, not a sport cruiser.

I agree on the linked brakes, just wish we got a more performance oriented 3 lobe vtec, but I still like it.

I've owned a 5th gen., a 6th, gen. and now an 8th gen. VTEC is a non-issue for someone that knows how to control a bike and throttle. You just need to decide if you want to have a smooth throttle hand or not. If you decide to have a smooth throttle hand, you won't ever notice VTEC engagement and if I can do it in the middle of a tight curve with no ill effects, other people can. Don't let other people spend you money for you.
