Doesn’t make them any less valid tho.

Probably not. But mostly I was pointing out the age of the posts when someone commented that they were still using K&N filters.

My 100,000+ km 5G uses no oil at all that I can detect. I don't beat hard on it but it gets to see 9-10,000 rpm every now and again, and I'm always gentle on it until I see over 60C on the temperature gauge.

That was back in an age when they were made in a factory closer to base than they are now and probably to a higher case spec than today.

Aw nuts. Any news on this? I live in the desert , and once rode for 4 hours of an 8 hour ride in record - breaking 120° temps. Never saw the oil climb above 245. Who maybe after turning it off. I don't remember.

That said, I did a harder break in on my bike too. No oil consumption. The increase in piston temps and ring diameter is minimal. Yes, it scores a few 0.0001"s, but it won't cause blow-by.

Your consumption is not normal, but it is likely not from your break in.

"Never saw the oil climb above 245." You have an oil temperature gauge on yours? All my '99 has is a coolant
temperature gauge. Oil generally runs hotter than the coolant, especially in certain areas of the engine.

I agree with you. I know that the temp is not oil. I have never seen a oil temp gauge on a liquid cooled bike. I do think that most of the damage was done with the thermostat failing on a high rev or load situation. I just never thought that a bike that was basically 2 yrs old and under 7,000 miles at the time would have such a stupid mechanical failure that could result in a major mechanical overhaul. Again no real visible smoke out of the can but I do have some carbon residue. I went up the same canyon today and got behind a utility truck and looked down being in first gear and it read 232. I stopped and went back down the canyon.

For sure. Ima say your coolant(not oil lol) system is the root here. I ride heavily in vtec in Phoenix, and still rarely see 230.

As for the trunk and branches, it's burning oil because something is warped, or... It's leaking very inconspicuously?

It has to be while riding, I have the bike in the garage with this experiment without the car. Clean concreate. No dripping no matter the 2-3 days I leave it. Under normal conditions under 9,000 ft. it is fine but going up an incline it has issues. Yes I think that the rings where affected. I do run full syth. and never have before so I do not know it's signature burn out of the pipe. Visible or not. but just loss.

What oil are you running - I'm using Semi-Synth 10-40 & not a single bike I own uses a drop & they all get used vigorously - lol!

Two ways you normally burn oil; valve guides or rings. If it were valve guides, oil would leak through while it sat and produce a blue cloud when you first start it. Chance are, you scorched the dino oil when it got hot. Probably have carbon or gunk in the oil ring groove preventing it to seat properly. Maybe someone here can recommend a gas additive that works and the rings will cleanup on there own. I can't vouch for any, but alot of guys run Seafoam through their engines. Try Googling the problem with rings, don't be specific about motorcycles, other engines do it too.

Follow what alliance has said and also switch it to a semi synthetic 10-40. It won't add much to your cost especially it's it's just going though the engine anyway.

    Seafoam will remove carbon buildup.
