You know, she must have done something to piss him off. That kind of anger doesn't happen in a vacuum. Pays to be cool and courteous on a bike- even if it's not deserved.

The human species is destined for extinction. Glad I won't be around for the entire show. It's shit like this that has made the internet such a shitty, nasty, fucking, thing. Rob, you're my friend, but I gotta tell ya, troll somewhere else, man. The world is divided enough already.

Not necessarily, sometimes just being in the space someone else wants to occupy is enough to set people off. Hell, I've seen people get all pissy just by passing them in the passing lane. No rhyme nor reason.

    The linked article states:
"While stopped in the next slowdown, Bowlin could not believe what she saw in her mirror. Jones had stopped his car and was coming toward her. She put her kickstand down, preparing for a fight."

Which is basically what she also states here:

And the aerial pictures I've seen online appear to show Jones' SUV (assuming it's the silver GMC Terrain) stopped two cars BACK from Bowlin's Yamaha.

What's interesting to me is that Many other articles, however, report that the Pierce County Prosecutor's Office released a statement that Bowlin was 'boxed in' by Jones' SUV and was unable to ride away (which IMO would definitely provide more support for a self-defense argument).

I'm not saying she was right/wrong or justified/unjustified, I'm just saying that's a pretty big discrepancy for factors or circumstances regarding a use of deadly force/homicide.

As an aside, I can't help noticing that she is rather peachy.

The only reason for this to be publicized is to influence people to choose a side on two things that are definitely hot button issues in our society, guns and motorcycles. Nothing good comes from this type of shit, we get it, people have absolutely lost their minds, their compassion for fellow human beings, their value of life. But it pisses me off when it's a bullshit veiled attempt to try and divide people into choosing a side. There is no reason for this, it doesn't help a damn thing.

I don't trust the media - IMO ALL outlets are suspect, the majority of them more than the minority. That being said, we call incidents, videos, stories, etc like these "case studies". Trying to look past any fomenting, does an incident like this teach any lessons or provide any food for thought?

A few off the top of my head:
Do we also ride motorcycles on the street? Do we also share the road with vehicles? Does road rage happen? Could it happen to us? What are some ways road rage happens or what are some causal factors? Are some of those within our control? What can we do to help prevent road rage? Are there pre-road rage indicators that we might be able to look out for? What kinds of actions or behaviors could result from road rage? If/when road rage occurs, what are some courses of action or options? If we're in a car, or on a bike? If we have a phone accessible, or if not? If we have room to continue moving or we're stuck? If we know the area or not? If we're armed with a dedicated weapon or not? If we have any improvised weapons or weapons of opportunity handy or not? What are the legalities for self-defense where we're at? Am I able to capably defend myself or not? Up to what point or against whom/what do I feel comfortable handling myself? What things could possibly go wrong? Even if I "win", what things could possibly go wrong? Am I solo or do I have anyone else with me that I would have to protect or otherwise worry about? What am I wearing that might make it easier/harder to defend myself? Do I have legal representation I could contact, for example in case I ever had to defend myself and I might be looking at being charged with a crime ? Am I going to stick around and/or make a police report? Do I know what to do/not to do when the police arrive? Do I know how to clearly and intelligently articulate what I did and why I did it? How could I prove my side of the story or what else might help me prove my side of the story should something like this happen to me in the future?

What if that had been me?

I really don't understand what goes through people's mind when we hear of incidents of road rage. Why can't people just step back a bit when this begins to unfold. All it takes is for one of them to remove themselves from the situation and the incident dies a natural death.

If I ever run into an of these morons I will lay a beating on them the likes they have never seen before right there and then. That will teach them to think before they act out their frustrations with violence.

I am not defending the guy, there is no excuse for trying to kill a youg girl, but there is one possible explanation why he went ballistic; Early Onset Alzheimers. At 60 it is quite possible. Years ago I watched my father-in-law change in ways we couldn't explain at the time. On trait that developed was his intolerance to any one trying to pass him, he would get very aggressive and belligerent. It was only years later did we finally understand. He had totally changed from the man we grew up with. It is quite possible this man drove behind this girl for some time, fuming and building up his rage till he snapped. No one will ever know unless his family can honestly shed some light on his behavior. His wife witnessed his horrific behavior, she must be able to tell if this was normal for him. It is a fucked up world.

Mental Illness/Mental Illness related or types of conditions are becoming more and more prevalent in LA County. Even IF someone is undergoing treatment, it doesn't guarantee that they won't experience some kind of episode. Re: Alzheimers, one of my aunts died a few years back due to Alzheimers and I have a buddy at work whose dad is going through it, pretty far along now. It's definitely tougher on the family and friends!

As far as reasons or explanations for the guy's actions, I can think of a few (some more possible/plausible than others):
He was a big time a-hole - he was "that guy".
He was drunk or under the influence of some substance or medication.
    He wasn't taking his medication.
He mad at his wife and took it out on someone else.
He was suffering from TBI and/or PTSD.
    She actually instigated the incident.
    She was "that girl".
She didn't instigate but she exacerbated it.
She brandished her gun at him.
She had done something to him/his SUV on another day and he recognized her.
He mistook her for someone else.
The last X number of motorcyclists smacked his mirror and he'd had enough.
He wasn't upset but his wife was and riled him up to the point of confrontation.

I agree with Randy - the majority of the time, it takes two to tango.

It will be interesting to hear what the wife has to say and any other witnesses.

I just want to add that most people think of Alzhiemers as just loss of memory, in my father-in-laws case there was a drastic change in his personality as well. He was always conservative and polite. He turned into a womanizer and continually hustled my wife best friend, asking her to marry him.

Dramatic blood glucose loss due to diabetes has been known to bring out violent behavior. Not an excuse, but a reason to consider. When I was still on the beat, I went to a domestic where the man stuck out at the woman, then went into a diabetic seizure. It was the medical professionals, who when I asked for their opinion, told me that his violent behavior to his wife was most likely as a result of serious low blood glucose levels. I brought that up in discussions with the prosecutor where the decision was made not to charge under domestic violence guidelines which are very strict here.

I am so fortunate that with my diabetes, and how I feel when my sugars dip even slightly below, I get a feeling of the shakes which will wake me up I the middle of the night, and I can deal with it. I keep a couple cans of regular Coke in the fridge just for this purpose. It works well, and it works fast.

None the less, I believe in using as much force as neccessary to ward off a threat to your life, even if you started, or had a part in the conflict in the first place. Just becasue you may have done something wrong which lead to someone choking you out, doesn't mean you sit back and allow someone who was aggrieved, chock you to death. Properly applied, a charoteroid chock can cause death in as little as 17 seconds. But when I say enough force as neccessary, that mean only enough. Anything more is excessive and an element towards criminal charges. If all it takes to stop violence towards you is a verbal response, anything more than that can be considered an assault.

Not passing judgement on this woman as I don't know the details required to make that judgement. Just points to consider.

Yup it affects everyone differently, some good, some bad, some more seriously than others. I see it in patients every day.

My in laws cousin , is presently in secure lock down in California as he has become extremely violent. Yet a year and a half ago he was over visiting and to recieve an honour from a university for his work on Scottish history. He was a professor in history. No signs of anything then. It just shows.
