decided to go outdoor a short ride today but after I got about a mile away from home I thought that it was a waste of time and that I was not happy riding only did about 10 miles, spent longer getting all my kit on and off!!,anyone else ever get that feeling?,I need to get more 'seat time' I think as not done many miles this year

Not that so much as I got started on a ride and didn't feel in-synch with the bike and thought I'd be safer going home. I was only 30 miles or so into the ride, but was afraid if I forced it I'd make some dumb error. Just one of those weird feelings.

I have no idea how that feels.

I ride every day to work, 30 miles a day. I look forward to it every day. Then on weekends, I want to ride for fun.

it feels a pain in the arse as now that I am retired and my (younger) wife is at work I can pick and choose when I can go for a ride, may try again tomorrow

One of my last rides in late July before my shoulder surgery :-( it didn't feel 100% right. I think I was a tad hungover and just wasn't clicking. But I was fighting the urge to push harder just because it was gonna be my last, or second to last, ride of the year (well... at least when it's warm). I finally consigned myself to a 'spirited' pace but well short of how fast I would normally take the same roads. It was a lovely ride on a beautiful day in the Snohomish River Valley. Near impossible to pass up a chance to ride for me, but in the back of my mind I was thinking, "If you crash, you saw it coming, dumbass".

Sometimes we need to listen to those spider senses that alert you when the conditions ( state of mind, weather, traffic, whatever) just aren't good. I say, "Well done" that you heard the voices and backed off.

Perhaps the sense that you were stealing time to go ride added to the excitement or satisfaction of the ride. Now that your a free man it just doesn't have the same kick as it used to. I really hope that doesn't happen for me. One of my buddies wants to head out for a couple of days next week and I'm inclined to go but everything is working against it. Time, cash, spousal pressure etc. Probably make the ride awesome but I fear that I'll take the easy path on this one and just toe the line. I hope things change for you!

Yep. I too commute on my 6 Gen and for the most part have no trouble doing it daily, that is if I have to be elsewhere, as sometimes work from home a lot. However, sometimes I can have a long day working and not get much sleep the night before and if I’m not feeling 100% in the morning, I’ll usually suck it up and take the car.

As I’m sure it is elsewhere too but LA/OC traffic can be a nightmare and if you’re not paying attention, you’re chances of having a collision with some vehicle certainly rises. I’ve actually rode while not feeling 100% on more than one occasion and although I was accident free, I came home much more tired and angst filled than on a day that I was feeling good.

I’ve even been on sport rides where my rhythm wasn’t good so I would have to back off and take it easy. Sometimes it would came back later in the day but to try and force it certainly isn’t the way to do it. Having ridden for so many years, I think we build up a “spider sense” and can tell when we’re just not there, the key is to listen to it.

Me to bro, the only thing to look forward to after my shift.
And now live around the corner from the perfect black ribbon piece of tarmac I hit daily.

Once in a great while, if I get out there but am just not feeling it, will cut the ride short and go home.
More likely I did not go out on a ride in the first place if I am not feeling it.
Or if I am slow to get going and the temp is 90 degrees at 9 AM. F that.

yes I agree with a lot of what has been said, it seems that after some crappy gear changes or iffy road positioning I feel like 'this is hard work and not enjoyable',never thought about having 'spidey sense' before

Applaud your instinct to go home. I know of several riders who had a real bad day and each had said they had a feeling or wasn’t into the ride only to end up wrecked and hurt that day. I am the same age. Fifty some odd years of riding experience and have done exactly that - returned home instead of pushing on. Experience brings intuition and just plain good sensibility When your not into the ride your not 100% alert. May you have better days ahead and get out there in your terms. Spend some quality time in the garage with it and I find it enticing after a good go through or clean up. Cheers

In same situation. Found ride buddies and some times just start out going to coffee or lunch somewhere leads to some adventure. But think of it as earned freedom after years of toil.

trouble is I spent longer getting all my gear on and off than riding!,when I watch some footage of Harley riders in the states just riding along on wonderful sunny weather and T shirts it looks so great, then I think bugger that if I fell off does not bear thinking about, now I now what AGATT means and endorse it fully

Plenty of times I have worked up a sweat just putting on the gear in the house. Ugh.
As long as the temp outside is reasonable, I make my own wind and cool off pretty quick.
